For those that read it, the newest Phrack just came out (#46). I get it
via mail, so I'm not sure of any place to get it via FTP or WWW. So I'm
just passing the word.

Phrack is an electronic 'zine. It's what "Wired" and "Mondo 2000" wish
they
were, claim to be, but don't even come close. The name itself is a hybrid
of the words phreak and hack.

Um, didn't FL say he got it by snail mail? Sounds a bit odd for an
electronic 'zine to me.

Ever heard of snail-mailing a hardcopy printout or disk? Phrack has been an
electronic 'zine since it's inception back in, oh, the early '80s sometime.
Though personally I haven't bothered with it since the E911 fiasco a few
years back. Oops! There I go, dating myself again :).

E911, the Bell South Emergency 911 implementation document. Someone broke
into Bell South's computer systems, snagged a copy of this thing, and sent
it to a bunch of people. Bell South got pissed off and brought them to
court over it, claiming that the document was worth a couple hundred
thousand dollars or something, and that it was stolen and transferred
across state lines (making it grand theft). The fact that you could easilly
obtain a printed copy of the document was ignored by Bell South's lawyers
until the case got thrown out of court. But for a while after that, Phrack
stopped publishing (a copy of the E911 document was in issue 42, I think),
and it got confiscated as "evidence," and anyone in posession of a copy of
that file was considered an accomplice to the purported crime--transfer of
stolen goods or funds across state lines).

Note for everyone else out there that wants more info about this,
Bruce Sterling goes into some detail about E911 in "The Hacker
Crackdown" which is available online at:

http://ice-www.larc.nasa.gov/ICE/papers/hacker-crackdown.html

(Part Four I believe, although the entire book is well worth
reading..)

I know someone who worked on that case(He was at Bell at the time, and has
since then gone on to better things), and I believe the Bell lawyers said
it was worth about $20,000+.... Even though you could go to the basement
of the Bell South Building and request a copy of the document for about
$30-40.... And they were SUPRISED when they lost the case. Lawyers and
middlemanagment..... what screwups.
