I have never had a problem with the GM telling a new player roughly what
kind of a character to make. Why? Because an existing SR team is only
going to be looking for a certain type of character. There are three core
characters in our current game that have been in the team for the last 15
months or so.

1) A Gillette (combat twink)
2) A PhysAd/Shaman (thief)
3) A Ganger (generalist/decker)

We just can't seem to hold onto riggers or mages. We have them, but the
players have ended up having to drop out. Since the team is actively
looking for those two skill sets the GM basically said "Rigger or Mage" to
the last two players to come in. (got a rigger then lost him, now have a
mage) Each of them was provided to us by a Johnson on a run that needed
their services. The characters got on well together and exchanged LTG's at
the end of the run. Basically made them into Level 1 contacts. Since they
were both people we needed to fill gaps in the team we called them the next
time we got a job. Had one of them chosen to run something else, that would
have been fine, but we might or might not have called them. Likewise if
either of the characters had been incompatible. If we thought they were
part of a double-cross we would have geeked them. If they were just a bad
fit we would simply never have called them again. So sorry, make a new
character. We did the same thing with an NPC combat decker. We have never
needed him again, but he was a good fit and definitely someone we might call
on again. (although since we have not really maintained him as a contact he
might not be available)

Someone earlier mentioned a case when someone brought in a Sammie with a
strong Type A personality. This conflicted with the existing team
leadership. No need to kill Golden Boy unless he is endangering you.
Simply take him on that run (presumably you need him for some reason and do
not have time to find someone else) and then drop him. Or just drop him.
Anyone here every see Ronin? Remember the guy that was ambushed by the cup
of coffee? He would have been a danger to the team so they just paid him
off and cut him loose. What is so hard about that?

So what if someone has to make several characters before they find one that
will fit into the existing team. Nothing is more annoying and destructive
to role-playing than excepting a PC just because the are a PC. I always ask
myself if I would associate with the PC if they were an NPC.

Just some thoughts....

We don't need no stinkin' mage! Besides, that short guy ain't worth his
weight in light pistol APDS as a mage! I'm all the mage we need.

Heh.
