Considering the sheer volume of posts, what is your opinion on taking this
to the newsnets or the IRC channels?

Well, #shadowrun is already up and running - it just needs people to join in.

It's not going to happen on a standard newsgroup.. rec.games.frp.cyber
carries the Shadowrun traffic, and it's not overloaded enough yet to justify
a Shadowrun-specific group, so that's duplication of purpose. You could do
it on an alt.* group, but some of us don't receive them.

There are usually IRC chat channels for Shadowrun discussion, and sometimes
for playing, but you don't ordinarily keep messages from them, so if
someone's not online they miss out. Also, some people can't get to IRC,
and some (like me) are easily annoyed by the average IQ there.

The mailing list is really the best way to handle this sort of
communication. If it's too much traffic, get the digest version, or set
up filters to kill the subject threads that bore you. I sympathize, but
there's little else that can be done.

Blessings,

_TNX._

I concure, in this neck of the woods they frown on people who use
IRC sessions and comedown like a heavily cybered troll on you if you
spend more than an hour on the system <grin>

Assuming your "newsnets" is actually Usenet newsgroups, it
wouldn't work. Except for the occasional dork, the ShadowRN mailing list
has always been a community -- we have insider jokes (most of which are
explained in the FAQ), well-known personalities, etcetera.
While that /sometimes/ happens with newsgroups, there're still
many more strangers passing through who have no idea what's going on --
and are too clueless to bother to look for a FAQ. (The same thing can
happen on mailing lists, except that I send it to every new subscriber.)
Also, of course, there're the spammers, massive crossposts, and
all the other things that people use to make Usenet an awful place.
As for IRC -- as somebody said, there's already a Shadowrun
channel, but people just have to use it. Personally, I wouldn't mind
seeing some of the more drawn-out discussions taken to IRC, and then a
summary of the conclusions posted to the list -- but that won't always
work, especially since there are so many of us.
Now, I'm extremely active on Usenet, and have utilized IRC from
time to time, so I know what the beneifts of each one are -- but when it
comes to ShadowRN's purpose, you simply can't get much better than a
mailing list.

It doesn't matter which server you use, as long as it's connected to the
regular server nets. I don't suggest any of the undernet servers because
of this. If you want everyone one to be on the same server to prevent
splits, then irc.texas.net port 6665 would be a good choice... It's fairly
centrally located. But as I said, AS LONG AS YOU CONNECT TO A SERVER, YOU
WILL GET ON THE CHANNEL.

WRONG!

Most of the servers are interconnected. However, due to the amount of
traffic and splitting, several other networks have come online that are
not associated with the main hubs. Undernet is one. Billynet is
another. There are a couple more that are more private.

Fine. Use the server I mentioned, then. after connecting to a server,
type /join #shadowrun
and you're there. Don't try to scan the channel, as I'm going to make it a
secret channel, which makes it invisible to /who.

Why do you want to do this? I'm much more likely to join a channel if I
know somebody's there.. I think you're cutting down on its usage and
usefulness by making it secret.

Well, the original intent was to keep would-be flamers and troublemakers
out, so that we don't have to worry about them busting in on our gaming,
but while I was on yesterday I found out that the channel's original
founder is still on, and keeping maintence. It's used for gaming, so if we
come on and there's a game already in-progress, then we can just switch to
another channel. The change to a secret mode was only goning to be during
the times that we would game, again to protect our interests.
