Subject: New Run: Plot-Questions (a little bit long)
Date: Mon, 9 Jan 1995 15:09:05 +0100
Hello everybody!

A long time ago I asked for ideas on a new run for the decker character
in my group. At this point a want to say "thank you" to all of the
people who sent nice (and evil) ideas. After talking with my decker
player and coming up with some background information how he would like
to see his parents I made the following run. Haven't played it yet,
'cause there a still a few questions unanswered. I would like to hear
some opinions and suggestions.

Characters:
Wiz, High-level decker, Elf, coming from Atlanta. Lost his parents
(both elves) to racial violence. There are hints in a Lone Star file
that the mother was a spike baby or older (much older). Father is
dead, Mother is nowhere to find. Wiz was raised by a friend of the
family and his mentor, a computer god, who too gets lost later in
some havoc. The mentor has later appeared and hassled the characters
in a form of matrix spirit, AI whatever (hasn't decided yet) when
he tries to join forces with an century old demon trapped in an old
samurai sword, but this is another story (kind of ronin, for the
people who knows). The other player is an owl-shaman with much power
(Initiate Grad 3). She comes from pueblo council.

I like to do a Tir background story, so I came up with the following:

Wiz's Mother (short M. from now on) was a Mage/Paladin/Warrior who
went a long way with Ehran the Scribe. I decided that Ehran and Bright
Water (see Tir Book) are the same person and M. was the leader of the
"terrorist attack" on the re-education camp, which destroys the data on
Bright Waters background. She was sent to Atlante by Ehran to look after
Wiz father (F. from now on). He was a computer hacker with an 4 digit IQ
or something like that. After some years Ehran gives her a command
(like kill F./do this/do that) to which she said "Go to hell". So she's
on Ehran's Death list.
F. is killed by Ehran's killer (probably by Alamos 20K, they think that
he's a high-rank Tir representiv, 'cause fed with false information by
Ehran and his middle-men). M. gets away on lays low first. Then she goes
to Denver (bought the source book = have to use it) and established an
information-brokering business. M. starts to look out for potential
allys, like enemies of Ehran. Ehran hears this and sees that he has to
kill her, before she can tell too much. But first he has to find her.

Now, the players starts their part:
An old friend of Wiz phone him, to tell him that an old object of his
parents was lying on his doorsteps. Wiz goes to Atlanta do find his
parents. Ehran watches his progress and hopes to react when Wiz finds
his mother.

Open questions:
Which order was M. given by Ehran? (kill F.? If yes: Why?)
Why did she resist? (All-time best: Love?)
Which old parent's object was lying on the doorsteps (photograph?
magic objekt? maybe potential plot-lines here)

I'm open for any suggestions. And thank you for your time.
bye,
Stefan

Kill F, because he threatened to frag up Ehran's plans for establishing Tir
Tairngire (without knowing it, of course).

The bullet that killed F :)

How 'bout an old-fashioned videotape? You could have some fun
describing the plastic box to a character which had never seen one
before, except possibly in old trids....
You'd probably have to have 'em break into a museum to play it!

Nice ideas, both of them, thank you. I think I'll use both of them.
Problem here is, that the object(s) should be delivered to Wiz's
Atlanta buddy and he (the buddy) should make the connection and call
Wiz and Seattle. I should not be so obvious.

The bullet must therefor be recognized as THE killing bullet and the
buddy won't have a clue what's that strange black plastic cube is.

Another plot-twist I forgot to mention:
I have the opportunity to introduce a new player into the game and
the plot who wants to play a physical adept. I thought of another
paladin from the Tir. Haven't decided if she's on Ehran's good or
bad side. To be true, I don't think the player isn't able to handle
a conspiracy plot too good.
Any suggestions here?

bye,
Stefan

Put them both in an envelope addressed to Wiz. The buddy calls Wiz and says
that a package with some strange stuff has arrived for him, but that he
doesn't know what to make of it. The buddy appears to be very confused about
what is going on, and is somehow frightened by finding a bullet in his mail,
so he urges Wiz to come over to Atlanta and sort the whole mess out. OK,
it's not very not-so-obvious, but if you are mysterious enough Wiz's player
will likely take the bait.

>The bullet must therefor be recognized as THE killing bullet and the

Put his name on it :) Otherwise, most bullets pretty much look the same,
don't they? I don't really think they're a way for the player to recognize
the bullet as the one that killed his old man.

Unless...

*lightbulb appears over head*

F was killed by a very uncommon bullet. Don't let the player know this in
advance, but while he does some digging (he was a decker, wasn't he?), he
finds a police report that says the wound was caused by a round of which
only a few were manufactured half a century before the guy was shot -- say,
a 1.58mm flechette as used in the AAI Advanced Combat Rifle of the late
1980s (if you rule, of course, that this rifle nor its ammo were never
produced in quantity). Included with the video tape is a twisted flechette,
which was obviously fired and hit a bone, but is still recognizable as such
a flechette if compared to (an image of) an unfired one.
With this info, the player should be able to put 2 and 2 together and know
that the curled-up flechette is the one that killed his father.

BTW, with flechette in this case I mean a small dart, about 1.5mm diameter
and 4 cm long with small tail fins, not the rounds FASA calls flechette
ammo, which fire metal slivers.

For new players (new to RP-ing), I wouldn't force difficult plots onto them,
if I were you. They'll just mess the whole thing up due to lack of
experience. Especially with complicated situations from the Tir, if your new
player doesn't know the background story really well, she'll do all sorts of
things you feel are wrong.
