And just as we are discussing Japan, Korea, and feelings between

the two in the SR & real world, this comes across CNN's web page.

TOKYO (CNN) - Japanese Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi

on Thursday issued his country's strongest apology to

date to the South Korean people for 35 years of brutal

colonial rule.

DAMN!! You beat me to it!! Heard it on NPR this morning.

It was also reported that the South Korean president (who's name escapes
me, but his story is pretty interesting; a jailed political "enemy" who
becomes his nation's leader) said that this apology could/would lead to
more working together between the two nations. Increased economic
partnerships and even an easing of the ban on Japanese culture, which would
allow things like Japanese films to be imported into Japan. Legally anyway.

Of course, it could just be political posturing on both sides and not
really mean a damn thing (it's my personal impression that official
Japanese government apologies come with absolutely no remorse; no comment
about other governments and their apologies). Or it could be the beginning
of a new era of reconciliation. Stranger things have happened.
