Subject: New York, New York, a wonderful town?
Date: Sun, 13 Aug 2000 17:52:30 EDT
Well I've returned from my vacation, and returned with a question for
everyone. Now I've read the bit in the SR3 book, and in several other
sources, about how the Big Apple got hit by a massive quake in 2005 and was
summarily rebuilt by the corps, basically becoming a corp town. Anyone know
anything more than this? Is there a book I must have missed with more info?
I've been thinking as using this as a setting for one of my games. Thanks.

If you can find the Neo-Anarchist's Guide to North America, it has some
information.

Memory might serve me wrong but the only book about NYC is Neo Anarchists
guide to North America and that one is oooooooold and very much out of
print. Don't recall any of the newer once paying much attention to the
city. There are some novells where they hang around the city and in Target
: UCAS they mentioned that the stock exchange moved to boston and the power
followed suit.

Wonder if that means NYC is now a suburb of New Jersey ? :)

Living on the Jersey Shore, and seeing how this area is growing actually
quite self-sufficient in terms of jobs (not as many commuters anymore, though
still a lot...these days, most jobs are local)...It just might happen.

The Neo-Anarchist's Guide to North America has a chapter about New York
City in 2050. An important thing to know from it is that NYC only refers
to Manhattan, since that decided to split off from the other parts of
town, causing a lawsuit over the name that Manhattan won.

Other handy-to-know stuff: you need a pass to get into Manhattan, and
there are plenty of different kinds (for visitors, workers, residents,
etc.), and the city has three law enforcement corps (Knight-Errant, NYPD
Inc, and Winter Systems), with every district being policed by two of them
together. This does not work as well as was the intention :)

I used the NAGNA writeup for Manhattan in an adventure years and years
ago, 'twas great fun - even if one of the players could not comprehend
why a fixer would exchange favors to get them Aztechnology passes to do
a job in Manhattan.

I know that Manhattan Island is a part of the NAN again, but I read a
reference to this on the net so I can't point you to an offical source.
There was an unofficial write up in one of the NAGGEs IIRC.

Uh, no. Manhattan belongs to the UCAS. After all, it's one of the pieces
of real estate actually bought from the natives. :}

Are you sure you're not confusing it with Mercer Island, which is the
current name for the island in Lake Washington in Seattle? (In SR, it's
called Council Island.)

> There was an unofficial write up in one of the NAGGEs IIRC.

Yep, but it's very different from what's presented in the NAGNA.
