hey all,

I was reading "Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire" last night, and it
featured a model of a dragon which moved, and this got me to thinking
about uses for enchanting besides foci - creating an animated model/toy
would certinaly be one. it would be expensive, and only the rich could
afford them (thence becoming a status symbol in thier own right), but I
thought it would be a nice way to move some of the emphasis of magic from
the combativive and showcase the other areas it can be used...ideas for a
run might include one enchanter figuring out how to do this, and selling
the toys, and corporations hiring shadowrunners to steal his
research/"extract" him/even kill him; apart from the magical knowledge,
how much would mattel, say pay for this :-)

so what do people think the enchanting costs would be in terms of TN's,
karma costs, etc - would it even cost karma - could you use anchoring type
rules instead? would the enchanted object act as a link to the enchanter
or owner? what do people on the list think?

Well I tend to think of this in ther terms of golems. Quickening an animate
spell into a statue. However I think this would mean only the creator would
control the animated objects and thus be unsellable.

Enchanting with an animate spell would cost much in the way of karma since
in reality a "toy" would only require an animate-1 spell imbued into the
figurine/statue...now if you wanted a golem for security measures the karma
would be higher since the spell would need to be more resistant to
dispelling. (Not very good security if any neonate mage could dispell the
enchantment easily)

And I imagine in any sense the "enchanter" of the toy would hold a link to
it, however if you mass produced with several mages that would mean each toy
would respond to the enchanting mage more so than the head mage.

An interesting concept to try though if you can figure out mechanics that
would allow it :)
