Wait a minute. Does this mean that if I write a novel where the South
won the American Civil War, then I'm doing something wrong?

See a novel called Guns of the South, by Harry Turtledove. Great alternate
history work. Obviously his publisher wasn't no damyankee. And yes, that's
properly one word.

Only if you call it a historical novel :) Call it historic fantasy or
somesuch and it'd be fine, IMO.
