Yo. I'm really, really terribly new to the group, and
for that matter to the game. I just got SR3 and I'm
still boggled with the rules. For that matter, no one
I know plays it.

Does anyone have any good thoughts as to what I could
use as tutorials for single and multi-player use? I'm
trying to buy "First Run", but I haven't much spending
money (putting myself through private school). Are the
campaigns therein any good, and could I find a public
domain version?

Welcome to our wacky world (and I'm more referring here to gaming and SR
than I am to the list). Hold on; it gets weird from here.

I doubt you'll find a public domain version; if you do, it's probably
pirated.

In any event, I'm not sure I'd recommend FIRST RUN as a novice set of
adventures. There is a good adventure in there for learning all the basic
systems (magic, rigging, the Matrix, combat, all that jazz; the adventure is
called "Supernova"), but in spite of its packaging, it's not a beginning
adventure.

The game also doesn't lend itself to solo play, though one being the GM and
one other player is way cool. MY advice is, in general, to start out small
and build. Get character creation down, then combat (aside from basic
social interaction, the thing that gets used most). Then maybe try some
magic, then rigging, then the Matrix. But stick to one thing at a time at
first, to get used to it.

As for adventure ideas...do like I do. Rip off the movies. <g>

I hope this has been a little help, though I tend to doubt it (I'm way too
flip and way too under deadline to offer much advice right now), but feel
free to jump in with more questions. We've got considerable depth in this
room (somewhere); if we can't answer it, there's likely something very
wrong.

First Run contains somewhat basic runs, atleast food fight is quite basic.
But I wouldn't call it much of an adventure really it is more of a
shoot-out scenario where you learn how to do combat in sr. so you could
just as well make 10 characters and have them duke it out in a place of
your choice.

Don't think there are any public domain versions out there of the
adventures in First Run but there are certainly sites out there with some
adventurs/plots on them but they tend to be a bit more for the experienced
players.

If you are short on cash and still want to buy published fasa adventures
there is always online auction sites.

According to Daniel Laenker, at 18:18 on 21 Mar 00, the word on the street
was...

That kind of makes it difficult to play, doesn't it?

You can't really play a roleplaying game by yourself; you'll need at least
one other player, and preferably more.

I would suggest buying at least one FASA-published adventure, if only to
get a feel for the kinds of adventures are typical for SR. However, First
Run isn't really all that suitable for new players; you might be better
off with the Quick Start Rules, which contain a simple and straightforward
adventure (and a simplified version of the rules).

Other than the QSR, a few adventures that, IMHO, are good to start new
players out with are (if you can find them -- some have been long out of
print) Dreamchipper, Dragon Hunt, Ivy & Chrome, A Killing Glare, or Super
Tuesday (five runs in one book). All these are fairly straightforward and
as I recall don't involve anything too complicated.
