Nothing. Nuyen are based on the Japanese Yen, which is the /only/
denomination of currency. Banks probably keep track of fractional Nuyen out
to three or five decimals, though.

Actually, I think there are smaller denominations. At least there used to
be. However, since it is about 100 yen to the dollar, they have no real
value and aren't used much. Blame it on inflation.

There are 100 sen to 1 yen. You don't see sen very much anymore
because (obviously) they aren't worth all that much. They were in common
use before and during WWII.

Just like there are 100 "mils" to the cent, but only banks use them.

don't hire people like that for junkyen runs. The runs are the hardest,
so the pay can go over 1,000,000 per person. That kinda money goes for
the "slip into Renraku and change thses three sheets of paper for those
three sheets, change this file to read this, and leave NO TRACES.

3,000 would be for a roughing up, or a simple recovery mission. 8,000
would include some fighting.

In my game they don't even get hired for breaking and entering jobs till
they have a Good rep or better. The fixers lost too much money using
amatuers already.

| How much nuyen you all you GM's usually offer for jobs[?]

It depends. I'm a firm believer in moving from conclusion to premise,
and in this case the first thing to do is to decide the conclusion: how
prosperous are 'runners at their particular experience level? Base this
off the lifestyle costs, adding in a fudge factor for spare cash and
extra expenses. Then decide, on average, how many runs a year/a month
Shadowrunners get. Then divide; the result is the value of an average
run.

For any particular run, adjust the value down to signal ease or
triviality; adjust the value up to signal higher-than-usual danger
and difficulty. Pick the type of run to suit the expertise of the
Shadowrunners and what sort of work your game world offers for people
like them.

What was that about? In-Character storytelling? You might want to
jander over to ShadowTK. This list is for rules and background
discussion, please keep it for this. I have enough mail per day...

Thanx.

Oh, if you decide to visit TK, _read_the_FAQ_ before you post first,

I think it's more that none of us understood that it was a joke (doesn't
necessarily mean we would've gotten it, just means we wouldn't have had
so many questions:). You might make some sort of note to that effect next

It's not a matter of humor. But don't ya think it would have been...
helpful for us "normal listmembers" to give us some introduction? So we
could have concentrated on bragging about the formating? It's so
distracting to have to brag about two things simultaneous! :-)

Obviously, the question to get that answer is "What is the Answer to
Life, the Universe, and Everything?"...OTOH, _the_ Question to Life, the
Universe and Everything? That, I do not know (haven't read pas the first
book:(

The Cirius Cybernetics theme song alone in worth the cost of the tapes.

Thanks for making us do all your dirtywork. CD1 is now playing as
_I_ have to listen to the whole series until I find it. All this for

Subject: Nuyen

Folks,

A monetary question:

If the Nuyen is the world currency, how is its stability maintained?

Obviously the Zurich Orbital may play a role as a central bank, but what
*government* or megacorp-govt sponsors and regulates the currency?
Currently, all major currencies are backed by a State (the USA, Japan, UK,
Germany). Is it save to assume that Imperial Japan backs the Nuyen?

Also, given the *great* instability of the SRN world economy/interstate
system, is there a metal that "backs up" or is pegged to the
value of the Nuyen? If so, what metal (or other commodity)?

Thanks,

John Everett Till

I wouldn't expect that the nuyen is redeemable for a guaranteed amount of
any particular metal or other substance, though I would be very surprised
if Imperial Japan didn't have reserves of something valuable (probably gold)
to back it up.

I figure that the nuyen is the international standard because at least five
of the big eight megacorps are Japanese, and decided that they wanted to
have a stable currency to work with. With their prominence in the Japanese
economy, they could do terrible things to the nation if they wanted to
flex their muscles. So five of the Big Eight went over and made Japan
a deal they couldn't refuse to make the nuyen an extremely stable currency
with the support of a majority of AAA megacorps, and then went and invited
a bunch of other countries and the other megacorps to join in.

Joining the regulatory body that handles the nuyen means that you get
a stable currency and can have a voice in getting some issued so you can
run your government; if you're a megacorp, you get advance notice of
what's going to be going on economically as various countries discuss
what they need to do with their monetary policy, in exchange for helping
keep the nuyen stable. (This is why you get such isolationist nations
as Tir Tairngire on the nuyen standard.) I expect that governments tie
their reserves of things-with-value (like gold) into the nuyen, and
the corporations adjust their trading policies. If Ares ever gets into
asteroid mining and brings back a big honking chunk of precious metal,
there could be considerable intrigue and upset...

(Note: my training in economics is limited, and I'd enjoy hearing a
critique of this notion from anyone with more knowledge about the field
than myself...)
