I remember buying the Neuromancer game back in 1988 and reading a blurb
on the back that they were going to make a movie of it, but the
production company that had the contract folded before they even started
shooting. Of course, before I found that out, I had to listen to years
of "urban legends" about how the film had been suppressed by the govt,
etc..

I'd certainly like to see a movie version, though.

Corona's Coming Attractions is a good site that collects news and rumors
about films in development. Here's the Neuromancer link:

Neuromancer film? I know that Count Zero is coming out within a year
directed by Michael Mann (the guy who did Miami Vice) and its going to be
called the Zen Differential. Also the movie of New Rose Hotel has come out
which is suppose to be fucking awful. It has Christopher Walken in it.

According to Tal Meta, at 9:41 on 8 Jan 99, the word on
the street was...

Just as long as it's better and more true to the book than Johnny Mnemonic
was... A couple of months ago I finally watched it (after years of
resistance) when it was on TV, and my conclusion is that apart from the
name and a small part of the plot, it had nothing to do with the short
story whatsoever; so it's as a generic SF movie it was okay, while as a
novel adaptation it sucked big-time.

Well, William Gibson wrote the screenplay, so _he_ must have been happy
with it. (I agree with you though. No Molly, no Killing Floor, Ralfi
sucked... 'bout the only good bit was Henry Rollins.)

Gibson replaced Molly with the 'chick' that helped out Johnny. The killing floor was
replaced by the bridge and the bugs... Molly was taken out because she was too
complex a character for a movie.

Well duh. It's not hard to spot what they were replaced with, but that's
not my point. My point is that the movie was less good IMO, because they
_were_ replaced.

Ahem. I'd say you could develop a character in a 2 hour movie at least as
well as you can in a short story. (Yes, I know she appears in Gibson's
other books, but we're not talking about those - treating J.M. as a
standalone entity, I'd say the movie could have developed her character at
least as well as the short story did.)

My Lady, did you and the fellow you were chatting with really just put
"character development" and "William Gibson" in the same paragraph,
and
almost in the same breath? I think there's a law against that on file
somewhere in the UN, I'm almost sure of it....

HEY! I LIKE GIBSON! And I think he does wonderful character
development, thank you.

You're welcome to him, Victor.

>And I think he does wonderful character development, thank you.

And I think he couldn't write his way out of a damp paper bag if you
gave him a sharp pencil and a penknife. (Being published does not, by
necessity, indicate talent; witness Piers Anthony and L. Ron Hubbard, to
name a couple of prime examples.)

To each their own, I suppose, but if there's never a film version of
NEUROMANCER, it won't break my heart.

Erm, I've only read Neuromancer and I thought it lacked descriptive
writing which made it difficult to follow.

Maybe it's because I'm not used to novels of this type, I'm a very
picky Fantasy fan (fave author Katharine Kerr, try Palace which she
wrote with Mark Kreighbaum or her Deverry series) but I felt that the
difficulty following the book was a nasty distraction from a bloody
good plot.

Maybe the film would be a good idea, then I'd have an idea what was
going on when I read the book again!!

PS I feel like creating a new archetype, or rather tweaking an
existing one: Transvestite Troll Street Sam. Frank N Furter with
warts?

The book was written by Gibson when his total exposure to computers was having seen
a Mac once. He had, however, had some more extensive exposure to the punk lifestyle.
He simply put together a scenario that involved a lot of technobable and punk style. I
found it very easy to follow, but then, I had been a bit of a technogeek for several years
prior to reading it.
