How about deep sea habitats and mining colonies? (like on SeaQuest, but
fer "real".) Don't you think some megacorps have to be working down there?
After all, 3/4 of the Earth's surface is underwater, and there has to be
plenty of oil and stuff down there. How about Antartica?

Now that is a damn good point. With the mineral richs of 3/4 of the world
to be had I'm sure that there would be alot of development towards the
mining of it. And if you are to mine it, you would need some way to control
the equipment, with this being computer controled you wont realy need to
send people down there though. And as such I don't believe that there would
be any general civilian (read non corp) settling in the seas, with the
exceptions of the very rich and ecentric. There may be corp research
facilitys, if not under the sea then on top of it, to study ways of exploiting the
sea.

As for Antartica, it propable falls in the same catagory as the sea floor.

In all I think any work on these topics would be time better spent than
trying for space.

Remember the movie Abyss? It seems to me that an underwater drilling rig
makes a lot of sense. Undersea strip-mining also makes a lot of sense
(pick up the rock, move it somewhere else to get at the good stuff
underneath it).
