People,

Just now I had the Best Idea Ever... Which Has
Probably Been Had Before:
Skype*-as-a-medium-for-running-an-online-game!

*: Or your choice of voice chatting program capable of
letting at least 4 people chat at the same time.

It'd be ideal to combine it with WebRPG or any other
piece of software that gives participants the
opportunity to push counters around on maps, roll dice
& centrally keep track of stats.

It's geeky, but I'd play it, my big question is
whether I have to set one up myself.

cheers,

Jan Jaap

Skype is a fantastic two-person chat tool.

It's okay with three.

I've tried it with five before. The results were a baleful cacophony
that rended the mind and soul. We could barely understand each other
enough to say "Go back to text! BACK TO TEXT!"

...Which is not to say all voice chat programs would be equally bad.
But it didn't work out with Skype the one time I tried it.

I had thought of doing this with a teamspeak server set up on my OC3 but
didn't ever get the people together to do it

I've actually been developing a tool like OpenRPG for online tabletopping
but it's slow when you're dev'ing it alone :)

What are you using to develop this? I might be interested in helping out if I
am familiar with the tools.

I am participating in a net-game right now for L5R. We are using
ventrilo <http://www.ventrilo.com/>; as our Voice-over-IP. It works
wonderful for up to as many players as you want. Ventrilo was developed
for online gamers playing MMORPGs and other online multiplayer games.
It uses a limited amount of CPU resources too. Check it out, it may be
what you are looking for. Currently we have 4 players plus a GM so that
is 5 of us. We are also using microsoft netmeeting, which kind of
sucks, to use whiteboards, transfer files, maps, diagrams etc.

For those of you that run games via Ventrilo, what other
resources/software do you use? A curious mind wants to know :)

I don't use it for SR, but that's not a bad idea, either... Hmm....

Heh, yeah, I use it for City of Heroes and it works like a charm, and
I've thought about using it for table top roleplaying, but haven't
made that leap yet. I was hoping to learn from the experiences of
others on that front :)

We are using Microsoft Netmeeting. It is not the greatest, but it works
good for file sharing, and it has a nifty whiteboard feature. The other
good thing about it is that everyone who is using Windows 2000 or XP has
free access to it. I have a friend who used a Mac so he can't play
since he doesn't have Netmeeting. We/I am also looking for something
that is more multiplatform and more stable than Netmeeting.

Like everyone else is saying it works like a charm. My only complaint
is the annoying echo, but I figure that is an issue of IP-relay rather
than just ventrilo alone.

It's probably being caused by one or more of the players using a
microphone and computer speakers rather than a headset with a
microphone. That's always been the culprit when I use it with the
people I play CoH with. One person persists in using his surround
sound speakers with him and his microphone smack dab in the middle. I
finally had to assign "special effects" to him to cut down the echo
from him. I applied the flanger effect and modified it a bit and now
when he echoes it's more of a background noise than a distracting
echo.

Is anyone on this list interested in trying an online shadowrun game
using Ventrilo? I wouldn't mind trying it, but I am too busy to commit
to GMing. I could play a one-shot, or two maybe.

I would totally be up for this if we could find someone to DM.

I work thrid shift right now, but after next week I will be on first.

Anyone interested in playing this weekend? Tommorow perhaps?
I know its short notice, but I am really wanting to play, and my wife and

I would love to, but right now i don´t really know if i will be able
to attend. In the next couple hours i´ll probably have a better idea.
(oh, and sunday is father´s day here, so i will be with my kid and my
dad, so consider me as a "maybe" to saturday and as a "no no" to
sunday)

Lets plan on doing it in a couple weeks then. With only one person
able to play today, I rather just wait till we have a full group lined
up.

If I GM it will be 4th edition. If someone else is willing to GM then
we can do whatever they want. I would rather someone else GM as I have
never been able to actually "play" a game of SR, I've only ever GM'd

I am also trying to drum up some interest in the dumpshock forums. So
if we can all agree on a time and date we should be able to get a game
going.

I would like to try using http://gametable.galactanet.com
for the tabletop aspect of things, and either ventrilo or Teamspeak for
voice chatting.
Anyone still interested in this can use the forum I set up at
http://shadowrungroup.proboards47.com/index.cgi
I am hoping we can get a game together for this saturday. Sometime around
noon EST, until whenever interest starts to die out.
