Hi,

What is the best way to run an online game?
Live games: WebRPG or plain chat rooms?
Message Based: Email, Message Boards, or HTML/Java based?

Hey,

Live Games I'd say use GRIP (free for the players but cost money for the
gm. A great program.

Message Based I'd use a message board.

WebRPG to me was more trouble than it was worth. Chat rooms are a bit
simplistic for my taste. Both take so long to type and respond that the
rythm is lost. Email games are great, but very slow. I'm actually running a
Vampire PBEM right now [PLUG! email me -privately- if anyone is interested
in playing]. They allow for very descriptive narration, and is like
participating in a book. Very slow, though. Haven't tried the others, but
I'd say they're much the same though the message board would be less private
if you're into sneakiness.

OpenRPG is a lot like WebRPG but is totally free (even for GMs). It's
even open source so is constantly being developed. It allows for open
ended rolls used in SR (but when I last used it the rolls were still
totalled). It was also a bit faster than WebRPG when I last used it
(several months ago).

He isn't kidding. Even when your players post regularly it can take
more than a week to complete a day in game.

They do seem to have a huge advantage over more instant systems, especially
for existing and established characters. It seems to allow you a lot more
ability to describe not just what your character is doing etc. but also the
motivations and hidden emotional reactions.

The closest I get I'm afraid is ShadowTK interactive fiction which is much
more trying to tell a story than play a game.

I regularly game at a chatroom format site. The link is :

http:/Seattle.darkrelic.org

We could use some new gamers, things have gotten a little slow recently.

Small mistake here, it's http://seattle.darkrelic.net.
Looks good, by the way. Too bad it's chatroom-based though, I
don't have time to play those; had there been forum-based games I'd
definitely have joined.

There are several online Shadowrun games that use the MUSH/MUX code
base, which is similar to what some people might know as a 'MUD' except,
it's a role-play environment that you manipulate through various text
commands, it's not so much of a 'shadowrun now' experience as a 'create
a character for a shadowrun world and live it' www.mudconnector.com
<http://www.mudconnector.com/>; lists them if you search for
'Shadorwrun'

I created a Vampire character a long while ago, but never played him
because he just didn't fit into a standard campaign. It occurs to me
that he might work very well in an e-mail campaign, and I would be
interested in trying it out.

The basic concept was for an extremely talented artist. He mostly does
full-size marble statues that rival those of Michaelangelo in quality,
except that they are of completely fictional subjects (gargoyles,
dragons). They are extremely lifelike. The sculptures are known world
wide and the artist is hailed as a genius. The only thing is that no
one has ever seen him.

The reason for this is that he is a Nosferatu, and he has almost zero
direct contact with the human world (he possesses .none. of the typical
Nosferatu disciplines for disguising himself). This means he doesn't
get out much (and this is what made him difficult to integrate into
live campaigns). His artistic abilities, however, put him in an
interesting place in Vampire politics, however, as he has allies within
the Toreador and other clans, which is fairly rare for a Nosferatu (as
far as I can tell).

I'm thinking that such a character might be interesting in an e-mail
campaign, sort of like an NPC in some ways, but controlled by a player.

Let me know what you think.
