I believe I mentioned in a previous email that I was GMing a game in
Greenville, South Carolina; that game appears to have fallen apart before
getting started, due to player time constraints. I've had several requests
from friends of mine not on the ShadowRN list to GM an online SR4 game which
we can run at our convenience, and I think I'm going to actually make an
offer to the rest of the ShadowRN list to run such a game. You heard me
right -- it's an open invitation, folks! Play from the comfort of your own
home!

I plan to use two tools to make playing this game as easy and convenient as
possible for everyone.

1. GameTable ( http://gametable.galactanet.com/ ), which is an online
whiteboard designed for mimicking tabletop RPG game grids. It comes complete
with a infinite grid (square or hex) and "markers" available to all players,
as well as the equivalent of user-importable figurines ("pogs"). One can
also load images under the grid for pre-made areas to explore. It also has a
die-roller built in, so players can either roll real dice and type in the
results or just put in a formula -- e.g. "5D6" will output six individual
die rolls (perfect for SR). The best part, of course, is that it's free.

2. TeamSpeak ( http://www.goteamspeak.com/ ) for voice communication, which
is much more personal and a whole lot faster than trying to type everything
into a chat box. The client software is free. I can be flexible on this
point, however -- if someone knows of a better voice chat tool, I'd love to
hear of it.

I also have forums on my personal site that I use for gaming information and
discussion; I won't post those here yet, since I need to clean them up and
archive the SR game that was using that space to avoid confusion. I'll use
that space for posting announcements, documents, session summaries, and the
like.

There are two basic requirements I'll have to place on players who want to
join: First, that everyone use voice communication of some sort, which means
a headset or microphone/speaker combination. Second, that everyone speak
enough English to follow along; I speak a little German, but that's the sad
extent of my multiculturalism.

I have no particular preference as to the game's starting setting. I'm most
familiar with Seattle, but I'd love to play in a game that isn't based
there, or at least goes elsewhere -- mostly because all my old GM's games
were Seattle-only. I also want players to have a lot of input into what
happens and how; inventiveness and initiative will be rewarded.

If anyone wants to play, let me know and we'll start working out the
logistics. If anyone has comments or suggestions, please speak up too --
this is something of an experiment for me, and I want to make sure it works
well so that everyone has fun. I have an overarching plot concept already in
place and a starting run or two, so as soon as we have enough people, we can
get started.

Ventrillo is pretty good and also free. I think Teamspeak is a hair more
popular overall though.

Mostly, because it is awesome for pr0 gamers and the more social
player of a friendly online-fragfest.

And teh server setup is dead easy, too.

I would love to be included.

My time zone is EST.
I am usually free most weekends, and with some forewarning I can be free any
week night.

I really hope you get a good enough response to make this happen. I tried to
set up something similar a few months back and didn't get enough people
interested.

Feel free to contact me off list at this address or my other one

Thanks for this oppertunity!

Good questions all. Let me try and take those in order.

Plain-text character sheets are fine; I could even post read-only copies of
them online. I keep meaning to whip up Excel/ODT sheets, but I see no real
reason to be fancy.

Right now, I'm thinking that the standard 400 BP allotment would be
appropriate; same with availability ratings. This will let everyone start
off in a character range they're comfortable with, and give me some room to
make certain scenarios easier or harder without resorting to the improbable.

Regarding Denver, Chicago and elsewhere: Again, I never had a chance to play
with those cities and political situations. I'd have no problem with those
cities, or anywhere else, but I'd have to study them pretty carefully ahead
of time and find copies of old sourcebooks. As far as bugs in Chicago: There
are, I think, a few left in hidden places, simply due to the size of the
infection.

Not to forget, that not everyone is blessed with MS Office of the
appropriate version. ;)

Another point: It is your campaign. You can adjust the political
situation anyway you like, as the paydata on Shadownet is of
unverified authenticity, as a lot is opinion adn/or simply stolen. The
Truth is what you make it to be, especially in the 2070s (Horizon,
anyone? Truth communciation specialist?)

I´m an ignorant fool and so i don´t know my time zone but it´s 17:51 in

http://www.time.gov/timezone.cgi?Eastern/d/-5/java

and 18:51 in my clock, so i must be close to EST, somehow.

I´m free at night most weekdays, friday included, but i do have an
issue with weekends, because i spend them in my mom´s place and she
uses a 56K modem on a very very rusty phone line.

Ventrilo has vastly superior voice quality as compared to Teamspeak. Unless
you absolutely cannot get a Vent server, please prefer to use it.

Now, why don't you publish the server connection parameters, so we can join
the convrsation?

Vastly? Not. I've used both and can barely tell the difference.
However, there is a big difference in ease of use and set up.
Teamspeak is much easier to use, both the client and the server.

It's pretty easy to answer your own question, just go to their websites and see what's
there.

Anyway, Ventrilo has a 'prototype' OS X client. TeamSpeak does not have an official OS X
client but there is apparently a 3rd party unofficial compatible client called
'TeamSpeex'. I have no idea how well either works. But TeamSpeak does have an official
Linux client and Ventrilo has nothing but promises in that regard (it's 'in development')
so you can guess where my vote would go ;)

I'll be happy to give both a test drive. TeamSpeak does seem easier on the
face of it, and I've used it before, but I've heard good things about
Ventrilo from people I trust. "Brand loyalty" isn't as important in this
situation as "Hey! It works!".

A quick note about GameTable, in response to a question or two about it --
it runs within the Java Runtime Environment, so it's pretty much
platform-independent. (It's basically a .jar file.) So don't let your Linux
or Mac habit stop you from joining up -- TeamSpeak has Mac/Linux clients,
and Ventrilo has a Mac beta and what appears to be a third-party Linux app.

I use Ventrillo for WoW on a Mac notebook. :-)

Note that for Ventrillo to work on a Mac, the SERVER needs to have
the proper codec installed.

Including Chris here, I count nine people interested in this game, eight of
them from this list -- not counting myself either. Quite promising, and a
level of response I certainly never expected! Thanks to everyone for their
interest. :) I don't have a hard limit on the number of interested parties,
since I'm sure that with the wide range of available times and geographic
locations, not everyone who's interested will be able to join in. I think,
though, that my final player maximum would be seven or eight; as my skill at
handling an online game improves, I might raise the ceiling a bit, but
that's still a lot of people to keep track of.

I'll be cleaning up my forums today and sending out the web address. And
here's the list of folks who've expressed interest in the game; if you want

We have daylight savings time here, too, that's not restricted to the
hemisphere you live in :) I'm in the GMT-1 zone, but right now the time
is actually GMT-2 (I think -- I always get that damned time wrong ;)

Hang on, you meant that I'm in the northern hemisphere and you're in the
southern, right, and so you're _not_ in DST and the north is? I took
your post to mean eastern and western hemispheres ... my brain isn't
working right in this heat (34 degrees in the room I'm in now, 36.5
outside, and me unable to sweat -- if there was someone responsible for
setting the daily temperatures, I would seriously consider killing him
or her. No, that was not a joke.)

Was that a joke, or a serious comment? (I can't tell ATM.) This since
36.5 real degrees = 97.7 American degrees :)

South Carolina is none too pleasant right now either; but at least we aren't
having smog problems.

Anyway: Forums! http://www.gpwoodward.net/forums is where you want to be.
Everything should be fairly self-explanatory. Just don't get confused
between the "Shadowrun Online" boards and the "Greenville SR4 Game"
boards.
The latter is for the local tabletop game I'm GMing... the one I'm quite
sure will be dead within a week or two.

Please feel free to make suggestions, comments and contributions on said
forums even if you aren't terribly interested in playing in this online
game.

I'm also interested, but I'm not entirely sure I'll have the time. For the record I'm on
Pacific time and I tend to work pretty late, so weekends would be best for me. Except I
have my regular Shadowrun games on Saturdays, so it would probably have to be on a Sunday.

It looks like there are actually enough people interested it might be worthwhile for
somebody to run a second game...

I've got a great suggestion (from the standpoint of someone that's helped
setup a few forum based sites lately), phpbb is good but prone to people
trying to break it (and is by far the most hacked), you might look into
something like Simple Machines Forums (SMF) it's free like phpbb and is much
more server friendly as well. (and I'm fairly sure that you can import all
of the info from the existing phpbb boards)

Also you might put up a brief description of what your personal preferences
on character design whatnot.

That being said, lemme know what the timeline's going to be and what other
info one might need for character gen and I'll try to get a character kicked
out asap

I suppose I can toss my game into the ring as well, I've got a forum based
SR3 game going on (has a fair bit of houseruling but, for the most part,
houserules won't be all that visible because I'm making an effort to keep
rolls to a minimum)

It's mid run but I've got a prime setup to tie a few more players into the
game at this point. If anyone else wants to get into it, e-mail me offlist
and I'll get you details.

t's quite likely that not everyone interested will be able to regularly make
whatever time we commit to (which is perfectly normal with any SR game.) If
lots of people remain interested, though, I'd be more than willing to help
set up a second game.

Hey!
Would love to be a part of this either as a player or adversary, or just to help out gming
;). These online matches can be hard to keep squared but i've run a few myself. Theres an
online dice rolling script you can use to keep things fair as well i just dont have the
link handy. Let me know how things go!

Where?

I have had it do down to -40 (both scales the same) in upstate NY.

And when I lived in Paris I did not have air conditioning (like it
seems most people don't). I always dreaded July and August (except
for Sunday mornings when no one was about and I could walk to Notre
Dame and see all the streets being cleaned, etc.).

THere are air conditions outside of department stores and cars in
Europe? Rarely seen that...actually never seen that (oh yeah - in my
dancing school is an air condition...but I wouldn't count that as an
appartment)...

They are becoming more common, even in a country like Denmark, where we
usually have 4 weeks of hot weather each year. A collegue of mine have just
had an AC unit installed in his bedroom.

Well, I tried to switch my forums over to SimpleMachines; turns out my
current host doesn't support that process, and I lost the original forums in
the process. Unfortunate.

Still, the forums are really more of a support feature for this game; I have
no problem handling everyone's character sheets via email until I can switch
web hosts and get some forums up and running again. We seem to have topped
out at about thirteen interested players -- definitely too many for me to
handle in a single game, but a couple people have expressed interest in
splitting the game up and running a similar game themselves, so that would
probably help a lot.

As I said before, I'm in the EST time zone (GMT-5); and my best time for
running this sort of game is in the evenings. I could, however, do it on
basically any evening except Sunday nights. It will be a week or two before
I can really start the game in earnest, however, since I'm moving between
residences. Don't let that stop you from emailing in character ideas, though
-- I'd like to get this up and running before too long, and once I find some
forum space I'll set them back up and post them.

Oh, the value of backups. ;)
I learned that the hard way, too.

Enough people for a more Euro-centric game? Would be a lot better in
terms of logistics (and I'd get a bit of sleep during the weekend ;)
).

I'm at GMT +4.5, but I would be interested in playing as time permits, so if
you need an extra player for games every now and again, please let me know.

Thanks!

Re: New game online.

I don't mean to test your limits, but I'd be interested too. I want to
learn a little more about the Matrix/Rigging actions a little more.
Let me know when you have a free slot for me.

Forgot to post my timeframe. Im in Utah with MST +Daylight. South of
us, Arizona does not observe the daylight switch. I hate the daylight
switch myself. It's 95*F/35*C at 21:00 (That's 9pm for those 12-hour
folks.)

I'd be interested, but I don't have access to a microphone ATM (has
anyone had any success in connecting a standard PC microphone into a
Line6 Pod?), which makes me kinda useless.

I wouldn't mind an IRC game, though, if people still know what it is ^^.

Ditto here, or a voice enabled version, I did this once (or tried something
similar) and it was quite handy if you could have all of the actual gaming
going on in text and the OOC in another room or voice chat, then you can
take the chat log and put it to a site so people can see what is going on in
the game if you're so inclined.
