"Communications specialist"? Do you mean a radio operator? I would imagine
not -- the radio is enough weight to carry already, and a pistol does not
offer much that the standard-issue rifle cannot also be used for.

Can't help thinking he wouldn't, having all that RTO stuff
to hump.

A Radio Operator doesn't carry a sidearm at all,
unless in Special Force Unit.

That's cool, just doing a little research. I thought
they might carry a pistol in addition as PP when on
the radio & too tied up to swing a bulky rifle around
In a hurry when the drek hits the fan.

Yeah I understand your not really SF as a operator:
communication speciallist (Yes you're 'll right, It's
essentially a radio operator, It's just the official
title the Australian Defence force uses) but the
Australian army has you tied In & working very closely
with Commando &/or SAS which are SF Task groups. I
just thought being a specialist, like a Medic you
would require extra (firing a pistol while trying to
stuanch the flow of blood of a patient with the other
hand, as you haven't got time to swing a bulky rifle
around, by the time you react you've got a "third eye"
& become a casualty yourself) as you're a multi-roled
soldier In the feild.

RTOs aren't usually alone (they tend to use the radio when the unit's
officer has something to say to another unit's officer, or vice-versa), so
there will be others who do have their weapons at hand if the enemy is
nearby.

In the Vietnam war, though, RTOs tended to be liberally supplied with smoke
grenades, often four to six hanging from a string on the back of the
radio.

What did they do when the radio was all shot up &
beyond repair (provided they survive). Also I've seen
photo's of Aus radio operators & their either In land
rovers & armed with a rifle on foot (from photos I
don't assume commandos or sas).

Take it with them, I suppose. I don't think you want your radio to fall
into enemy hands, because they might be able to repair it and use it for
all sorts of misdirection purposes -- especially in a guerrilla war.
