I have a player who decided to play an Otaku..

The question is, can Otaku can Responce Increases? How?

First, I would ask, is your player ready to roleplay a Otaku. Can he
react like a 12 to 14 yearold? Especially when the party gets trapped in
a firefight? Personally, I would only let a very experienced player play
an Otaku, and only if they were going to be able to do extensive
roleplaying. Otherwise, he is probably just doing it for the stats and I
would't let him... Just my two cents worth...

Officially, I do not think they can. I've been considering allowing the
use of Bioware (specifically Synaptic Accelerators) to allow an increase
in their Matrix reaction, but have not yet come upon an ultimate answer
as I have not recently had time to finish reading VR 2.0, play with it
and decide.

The player in control of the Otaku is one of the most experienced role
players in the party, and so far has played the Otaku rather well. Stat
wise the other decker in the party can kick his ass on and off the matrx,
so I'm not sure that would ever be a reason he played the Otaku.

But that's not really the question I asked.

Sorry...I don't have a clue.. When you say responce increases, are you
thinking of like from a cranial deck... I don't know if they would be
compatable because the otaku is using the hologramic (i think) properties
of the brain to form the program, rather than repitious binary
operations.. You might be able to make a custom analog device that would
do the same thing. I think the analog nature would allow it to better
interface with the workings of the otaku's specific mental processes, but
I am really stabbing in the dark.... Can't really help you.

ah ok. It's just that the Otaku has an Init of 3D6, while a heavy league
decker can get up to a 6D6 connection.. So we were all wondering about
that one :)

I have an idea: allow him to do it with a complex form. It may not make a
whole lot of sense (he's using his mind to speed up his mind), but, since
you have to program Response Increase anyway...

Yea, noticed that. But that otaku can get masking and hardening at insane
levels. And since they never have to worry about SOTA, they just get
better and better and better.. (Varient of the Energized Bunny) Think how
insanely powerful an otaku would be by the time he was 20. The mind
boggles...

Get a Cerebral Booster (ST), or Encephalon (also ST).
Both raise intelligence (well, the Encephelon does
for technical things like decking, so same 'ol) and
Otaku Response is (Int+Will)/2 +3d6 init. Also an
adrenal pump would work, I suppose, if you kick the
Otaku in the balls when he needs the speed boost
(Willpower +1 or +2 depending on the pump). Or a shot
of Kamikaze (+1 Willpower). Can't think of anything
else off the top of my head. Let me check the books
and get back to you.

Shawn
I'd like to try out an otaku myself.

Heh, heh, heh.... elective brain surgery on a child with no legal guardians

no dice are gained, though.

basically, there's no way to add more dice to the reaction for otaku.
If you want (I did), base the response increase on the maximum for the
MPCP rating (MPCP/4, round down) + 2 d6 (one for hot, one for basic)

Eh? Has there been a revision of VR2.0? In mine, on
page 145, about halfway down, it says, "An Otaku's
Reaction Rating in the Matrix is equal to the average
of his Intelligence and Willpower ratings." How could
intelligence and willpower increases NOT increase his
reaction?

Unless you're talking about Initiative only, in which
I agree, as the last line in the above quoted
paragraph is, "He receives 3D6 for Matrix
initiative."

Shawn
Feeling a bit cornfused.
