You may seen a change in this rule from FASA. A recent paperback novel out called
Psychotrope by Lisa Smedman kinda deals with this problem.

<*************Major
spoiler!!!!!!!!!!!!!!>

The novel deals with an AI who is dying due to a virus attack from a mega corp. (Can't
remember which?) It starts to die after it initialized a program where it is attempting
to change adults into otaku. In the end five adults (of different races) become otaku
because they were able to understand death and that the AI was dying. Their saving it
results in their becoming otaku. There is no indication how permanent this is but it is
done through a deep resonance with the AI. If these adults maintain their otaku
abilities then children with the same abilities will keep them in the long run if they
keep the resonance with the AI.

These are only guesses on my part as to the direction FASA is taking the otaku in
Shadowrun based on this one novel.
