I've heard a rumor (and I can't verify this) that AOL has begun to limit
access to non-AOL web pages forcing AOL users to surf an AOL-approved
internet. I know they've locked out sites such as Yahoo! and Hotmail
because they give free email, but if this new rumor is true then they've
crossed the line.

Makes you wonder if they've been taking notes from Microsoft, eh?

Because I never use AOL's browser, I had to double check, but Yahoo and
Hotmail are not blocked from me. I can't tell you that they are not blocking
sites, but I would hope that is just a rumor.

You know they've locked out Yahoo! and Hotmail? It doesn't seem that way for
me. I can load both of those pages. And I don't have any problems with loading
the Archive. AOL does a lot of annoying things, but this isn't one of them.

don't know anything about limiting web-pages, but the Yahoo/Hotmail thing may
just be a "ban" or limit on email, due to the spam mail from the users of a
free service. Just an idea no one has mailed me from such an account so, who
knows?

Nope. That's just a rumor. The only time AOL blocks access to web sites
is if you have Parental Controls set. It's also untrue that they have
locked out Yahoo and Hotmail.

I use aol and just tried and accessed the sites you've mentioned with
no problems. I haven't noticed any such limiting of the content I can
view. I do for the record use an external browser for most everything
but for the tests I used the internal and horrible one.

I've had no trouble accesssing various places that give out free
email and I've done quite a lot of looking in that area. Sorry
but move on to the next rumor. ;)

I've actually spoken with some local ISPs down here in Florida who are
banning/blocking Yahoo! specifically. It hasn't gone into effect yet, to
the best of my knowledge, but a group of them actually got together and
VOTED to do this. It seems because Yahoo! is actually reselling MCI
Internet service, after all of these dialup ISPs promoted Yahoo! for so
long, they're rather pissed. I don't know all the details, but I know that
it's pretty major. I haven't heard anything about blocking Hotmail, though.
I DO know that there are a number of ISPs down here that hate MS, so I don't
find it hard to believe that if they're willing to block Yahoo!, then
blocking Hotmail isn't that far a stretch.

Nope, this deal ended a couple months ago. Yahoo! is no longer reselling
InternetMCI.

The blocking that some ISPs do isn't because of any hatred for Yahoo! or
MS, it simply has to do with the vast amount of abuse (ie: Spam) generated
by users of these services.
