According to Arclight, on Mon, 20 Aug 2001 the word on the street was...

That's probably because it's not a real war movie. It may be set in the
Vietnam War, but it's not actually _about_ the war, unlike movies such as
Platoon or Full Metal Jacket.

With AN, the better question is: what didn't they smoke (and snort etc.)
when they made it? :)

My suggestion if you want to understand the movie better: read Heart of
Darkness, by Joseph Conrad. Its a book on the evils of the European
colonization of Africa, and its what Apocalypse Now was adapted from.

Possible, but when I heard quotes like "we just wanted to finish the damn
thing at the end" or "Marlon Brando himself had no idea how the character
would react to this situation" I begin to wonder what this all is supposed
to be about ;)
