The Corvair was a mid sized low end car manufactured by Chevrolet from
1960 - 1969. It had a rear mounted engine and was loosely inspired by the
VW Beetle (in terms of being a cheap reliable car with low maintenance
costs, not looks). It was also thew vehicle that brought Ralph Nader to
the public spotlight when he wrote a book about it titled "Unsafe at any
speed". The rear mounted engine caused aome problems with it's handling
and in tight turns they had a tendency to roll (always a bad trait in a
car). Now it ranks right up there with the Edsil in automotive infamy as
examples of bad design (not that either was a terrible design really, the
companies managing them did not handle them well).
