The more you type, the less I believe your claims of education. If
they are true, then I feel really sorry for our education system....
(I guess spelling and grammar are a lost art...)

The lighthearted "jabs" at this country involved its arrogance to
retain a system of measure not used in the rest of the world. You can
love your country and see that things can be improved, Chris.
What does a being a patriot have to do with anything? Does it mean
you turn a blind eye to corruption, ignorance, or apathy? Does it
mean you do not encourage change, growth, and enlightenment? Not in
my book.

If you say so. I guess you aren't as on as many lists as I am, or
involved in as many internet activities as I, because every one I
know of encourages the use of smileys. (Bottom line, is though,
regardless what the rest of the internet community does, smileys are
encouraged on this list, as is indicated in the list FAQ.)

Careful reading and thought on your part would have kept you from
posting such a silly thing in the first place.

Kids? LOL! Unless your age is four decades or more, you can't call me
a kid.

Actually..they are... and becoming more so. It was time for a change
anyway. 1066 saw the Norman scribes change the language of the times...14th
c saw another change..I think we are due again...the internet might do
that....or are we so French that we need to hold it no matter the cost?
Also, I type as I think...I don't proof it (which I admit I should because,
on first draft..my writing sucks..always has....but..this is not a forum
for well written essays..it's a discussion group.((oops..can of worms
#2..there is a flip side to that argument, the 'meaning and written word'
crowd. Sorry..for the sake of the list...lets not go there.))

Scroll down some. I get inflamed at others putting down my country. I did
not fly off the handle at it..I made a quip..a lightly worded jab back. You
saw it as serious. *shrug* Has nothing to do with the metric system.

If I use the metric system I will be enlightened?:) :) :)

Ooops..my bad I guess. Sorry for my lack of emoticons...In the future I
will make myself over-clear as to avoid offending the bulk of the internet.
I have not the time to be on so many lists that it takes up the bulk of my
life. I will be quiet now and take my schooling from the dino's of the crowd.

No..not really. Once..is a joke. Twice...is not. Three is an insult. In the
few weeks since I have returned to this list, I have seen my country bashed
more than three times. It tends to wear on one after a while. I tried to
respond in a lightheated manner. One that would sound like an ignorant
redneck, with no schooling. I did not drop smilies behind it due to
asthetic reasons..*shrug*..my bad...but still should not be the cause for
the comment back.

Ok, for that I am sorry. Did not realise I was insulting one of the AARP
set...:) :) :) :)

Not among those of us that care to speak and write the English
language correctly.

Here is a great website to peruse for those that do care.
http://www.columbia.edu/acis/bartleby/strunk/

They used to teach that stuff in school, along with reading, phonics,
and basic math. It's sad it still isn't. All this touchy-feely
politically correct crap makes me sick to my stomach....

<sigh>
No, I said being patriotic...oh, never mind. It's not worth it.
I tire of this thread.

See? That didn't hurt did it? :)
I'm not as old as you imply. Just a 32 year old who gives a damn
about netiquette, grammar, and common sense. Not to mention
Shadowrun, among other things.

Speaking of which, this is way off topic. I'm done now. If you wish
to reply, do so via private e-mail.

Drekhead, I'd just like to point out that Struck was lampooned in England as
teaching a dialect as though it was the true speech.

(The classic one I remember, besides lacking u's and what not, is 'every
one', 'some one', and so on... correct usage of English permitted 'everyone'
and 'someone' since the middle ages, just as 'goodbye' was correct
terminology, as opposed to 'good bye', or 'God Bide with you'.)

Certainly phonics, arithmetic, and reading should be taught. Anyone who
doesn't understand fractions by the end of primary school (your grammar
school) should be sent back to try again. And their teacher fired.

I'll give you that. But for the most part, he's right on the money.
Certainly can't hurt.

Unfortunatly the people who never quite got fractions tend to become
politicians. The results being a perception that factions are hard so they
are taught ad infinitum. I still remember when I was in 4th grade and the
teachers brought out this cardboard pizza pie game thing and told out
parents that they should get it to help us with fractions. It took me two
weeks to convince my parents that yes I actually do know that 3/8 is better
then 1/4.
