Keep in mind that civilians always suffer in war. Nature of the beast. And
I'm not enough of a historian to know what Japan was planning, but my
understanding has always been that they planned to drag it out longer & that
more lives would've been lost through those battles than were lost via the
bombs. I also consider soldiers innocent bystanders. They really don't have
much choice where they'll end up, any more than a person has the choice
where to live & enjoy any given country's particular rights & perks.
Remember the episode of M*A*S*H:
Hawkeye: War is worse than hell.
Father M.: How do you figure?
H: Who goes to hell?
FM: Sinners.
H: Right. No innocent bystanders.
All that said, I'm biased. I'm patriotic. More importantly, my grandfather
would've been on the next plane over there and would probably be dead
instead of coming home & fathering my dad. I can thank the H-Bomb for my
existence. Hard to complain at this point. Still a tragedy, though. War
sucks for everyone.
