Hmm, so here's the hypothetical question for out little brain trust to
solve:

How to bind a book, economically, durably, and so that someone at the
store can browse the book and see how groovy cool it is?

I was thinking three ring, but then there's plastic wrap and you can't
peruse. Plus the holes rip out inevitably.

Ideas, people?

Someone suggested Spiral binding the book. That's what I just did. I went
to Kinko's and they removed FASA's (generally poor) binding with a spiral
bind. It looks pretty sturdy. Or coil binding, though coil binding
inevitably gets crushed and then it doesn't work as well. Hopefully the
spiral bind will work well.

ICE, for a while, was using preforated pages with three holes punched.
Nice neat binding then you can put them in a binder if you want. :) I
never did. And all my RMSS books are intact. My RM books are another
matter ... ;)

Well, I went looking on the web for instructions for binding books, and
decided that rather than dismantle the book and put it back together with a
hard cover and all, I'd instead make a preemptive strike on my Cyberpirates
book, which was in like-new condition.

Tools used: hammer, small nail, piece of cork board, heavy sewing thread,
and a needle. Used the hammer and nail to make a series of holes near the
spine of the book, in a straight line and all, then used the needle and a
long piece of doubled-over thread to sew it up. The cork board was to
minimize the number of nails dulled and deformed by impact with the cement
floor on the other side of the book.

Worked very well, and didn't take long once I figured out what I was doing.
The dark thread doesn't interfere much with the general "look" of the book,
for those that are worried. Next time I'll get a bit closer to the spine so
that I can open the book a bit further (I got a bit too close to the text -
still very readable, but I'd like it to open a bit flatter). And I think
I'm going to laminate the covers so that it'll last forever :o) Of course,
forever is just my first impression...
