I think that's what Spike referred to

What are Normans if not vikings? Sure, people from the Normandy region of
France, but look at what the name actually means: "North Men" or people
from the north -- Scandinavia, IOW.

<trivia>A football team from a town 5 km from where I live is called "De
Noormannen."</trivia>

Well that conquest occured within the last 1000 years, 931 years even (give
or take a month and a couple of days)

Normans are not Vikings, they are descendant from Vikings but are not Vikings.
Just like I'm descendant from Pom's but I am not a pom.

Okay, then this is another case of the same word meaning something
slightly different in another language. In Dutch, "Noorman" is 99%
synonymous (sp?) with "Viking," while in English it now seems to me that
"Norman" means "someone from Normandy"

And "Pom" is...?

Actually, Gurth, "Norman" is distinct from "French", as the Normans
were
Viking settlers who colonised that area of France. So yes, William of
Normandy was more Nordic than French...

A derogatory Australian term for anyone from Britain.

OK then! Make it 931 years then....
Pedantic or what?

In french, it's an apple.
In Aussieland, it's usually coupled with the word whinging to mean Brits.

Although, that's not historically accurate.
None of my ancestors have been POHMs that I know of, but a LOT of aussies
were...

POHM = Prisoner Of His/Her Majesty...

(From the good old days when Australia was nothing but a large penal
colony.)

:)

Which is why I said "from Normandy" rather than "from France"...
