The windpipe (Trachea) is nice and easy, it's the standard strangle we were
taught, wrapping your hands around your opponent's neck you press both
thumbs into the hollow between their collarbones, it doesn't take much
force and it takes about three to five seconds before it becomes
"impossible" to get out of. The primary reason for that I'm told is the
survival reactions of the human body (which are very difficult to override)
kick in and are actually counter productive in cases like this.

The Carotids are on the sides of your neck, running up from just ahead of
your Traps (trappezius muscles) to the corner of your lower jaw and up
under your ears, they're quite difficult to compress properly (they are
after all vital for continued brain function, one reason you have two of
them, so they're reasonably well protected.) you can get a vague idea by
pressing on both sides of your neck, your face will go purple and the veins
on your temples will start to stand out and you'll start to feel like your
sinuses are being stuffed with cotton wool. At this point stop. Oh and do
it from sitting too.
I'm afraid all of the carotid techniques I know are impact based.

Even if you've never felt it before you'll know it's not good but the only
way to combat it is to break the hold.

Forgive my poor memory (and my laziness for not checking the archives) but
which art is it you're studying (or were studying for this sort of
techniques if they aren't from your current art?) I only ask because it
seems to be almost the reverse of what I've learned (pressure techniques
for the trachea and impact techniques for the carotids) so I'm interested
to see what it is...

Know the feeling, almost...
I always volunteered :-)

Yah, Twink, that's it. Choke or throttle is the
action. Strangle implies death.
