The game setting is "Harn," and it was originally released in the
early 1980's. It's a medieval fantasy setting that was initially created
to work with any system (i.e. it was just a setting with no rules
associated), but eventually they released a game system to go with it
(aptly named "HarnMaster"). The setting itself provides unparalleled
detail and consistency, and just reading the material gives a GM scads of
adventure ideas. It's very "low fantasy," though, and wasn't marketed all
that aggressively (Columbia Games is a very small company, like two guys).
Many of the sourcebooks and modules are woefully out of print, so it
wouldn't surprise me if you'd never heard of it. But if you ever see it,
and are interested in medieval fantasy rolplaying, by all means pick it
up. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Thank you. I was trying to tell someone about this game, but couldn't for
the life of me, recall the name. It's an excellent setting, and iirc, the
creators are history profs.

Just incase it's news to someone, Auran, the Aussie company that made Dark
Reign is currently working on a computer RPG based in the Harn world.
