Nope...last I checked Australian rules football doesn't either...

And steering this back to SR, how likely is it that more sports have reached
big time prominence? I'm thinking that with sixty more years, team
handball, lacrosse, and Australian rules football and jai alai could reach
the status of soccer, baseball, basketball, and, dare I say it, even
American football...

Gaelic football does have goalies.

In the Tir hurling is the national sport (Have you seen this insanity? Hockey
on grass with no pads).
I think you would see sports on the scale it is today lessened. With more
sports to choose from I think there is a better chance you would see a shift
in what the sports fan is watching and spending money on, not an influx of new
fans. The new sports might create some new fans but not enough to make a
difference. Take boxing. According to Shadowbeat there is cybered and non-
cybered. I can't believe that just because of cyber someone would become a
boxing fan but if you are already a fan and you have a choice of watching one
or the other what do you do?
This has happened with television. There are no less television watchers but
network television viewership has dropped dramatically because there are so
many more options these days.

Erm... hockey IS on grass and nobody wears protective clothing except for
the goalie. Oh, you meant _ice_ hockey...

I believe what they are referring to is what we Americans call
Soccer.

Trust me, I played a lot of field hockey in my days, both as player
(skin protection) and goalie (the full outfit) and I wouldn't touch
hurling with a ten foot pole. There are some very sensible rules in
field hockey that I don't see in hurling. I do see a lot of missing
front teeth, smacked fingers, concussions, etc. on TV however.
Hurling is the step before urban brawl...

They do wear helmets nowadays however, and I can imagine shin
protection too, although not all of them are that sensible.

And verily, did Duncan McNeill-Burton hastily scribble thusly...
|Nope...last I checked Australian rules football doesn't either...

OK then, Football has goalies. Any other game with the name football
prefixed by a country name doesn't.

There's only one game called "Football". (Without that prefix).
