Heard a very bad thing today.
A friend of a freind told me, so I'm not sure how reliable it is, and
please don't quote me, or think that I'm in any way slamming a particular
lifestyle or game system, but ...

After speaking to a few friends in the local county justice dept. there is
a current murder trial before the bench wherein the two teens being tried
for the crime apparently committed the act as a LARP "ritual
slaying/bleeding" while playing Vampire.

Already the general population has begun talking about "those evil RPG's"
and how they twist minds.
If it's true, and I hope it isn't, it's a sad thing for our hobby.

There's prolly some basis in reality.

A few years back, we had a similar trial happening in town, and because
one of the boys involved played ##$#, and used an axe to kill his mother
and grandmother, it was blamed on the rpg. I was working in the local
gaming shop during the trail, and it didn't really seem to hurt business,
we had a lot more people coming in to find out what rpg's were, instead of
taking the media's word for it. My advice to a few of the parents
concerned about their boys who were playing, was to sit in and watch, or
even try and join. Hey, it's the same advice for watching tv, and there's
far worse on the tube!

Yep. Just remember, how many people who play monotony have ended up being
embezzlers or bank robber?

> If it's true, and I hope it isn't, it's a sad thing for our hobby.

It always is. Some people should not play the games, but they'd get their
ideas (and find places to put the blame) from somewhere.

Well, this issue was best discussed by those spunky editors at Inquest
magazine. "Does God Cry When You Play Dungeons & Dragons" was a very
good article that researched , and told their findings about what has
been going on, with rpg's and the irked people that hate them.

"Acusations against fantasy games began in 1979 when Patricia Pulling,
founder of the political group Bothered About Dungeons & Dragons
(B.A.D.D), and Dr. Tom Radecki, from the National Coalition on Television
Violence, started publicly connecting D & D to a number of suicide and
murder cases."

obviously this has gone on very for a very long time, and really doesn't
stop, justs fades in and out.

"The game causes young men to kill themselves and others," Radecki told
newsweek in 1985..."

yet another showing of how people jump to conclusions..

"Pulling and Radecki have crusaded to raise the public's awareness of the
damage they believe fantasy games cause. D&D, they allege, is
responsible for no fewer than 125 deaths. Take Pulling's assertion that
in 1981 there were four million D&D players and factor in the teen
suicide rate for that year. We would expect to find 500 suicides among
D&D players just for that one year. Multiply that over a 15 year period
and you wind up with 7,500 suicides. But Pulling and Radecki claim there
were only 125."

never the less, there will always be the people that will make almost any
claim they can to implicate rpg's being evil, deathly, or dangerous.
Maybe they just can't understand them, so they try to destroy them....I
don't know. I guess it really only matters with the gamers, and
hopefully most people will take this with a grain of salt.

This story of a "vampire cult" is happening in Western Ky.
The people are From there.

I do know that there is an investigation still going on
where as to the involvement as to what RPG games
were involved.

I can't comment more because It would be not true as to
what I say. There are several Rumors on this thing right
now...

End of line....

That type of thing's always happening....

Even when the murderer was abused as a child/is a cocaine addict and suffers
from paranoid schizophrenia, the press always picks up on the fact that he
plays ADnD and instantly jumps to the conclusion that RPGs are the cause.

It has been proved that in general, Role-players are MORE stable and LESS prone
to suicide than non-role-players....

I wouldn't worry about it. There's something like this coming 'round ever
year or two anyway.....

There was a big story in the national news (USA) about 4 teens who
killed one's parents and took the car, etc. The newsies reported
that these kids played Live action Vampire and were a part of a
vampirecult, believing themselves to be actual live (well, dead,
really) vampires.

Luckily no one siezed on the role playing thing nationally.

Do you have a source for this? I am always collecting ammo... err,
VERBAL ammo in my ongoing firefig... err... discussion with my mother
about RPGs. Not that she tries to tell me I'll be unsocial, or even a
murderer, but she simply thinks it silly. At least, we both can laugh
when people start their "RPGs are evil!" campaign - for different
reasons, ok, but... :-)

Hell, personally I think that if you are that unstable that you take
RPG's that much to heart that you kill yourself or your family or friends,
then you'd have found another outlet for the disturbance somewhere else.

Could you tell me where to find that proof of stability?

It makes sense, because it (RPG's) provides an outlets for some of the
darker passions inside some of us..

It's always something. Judas Priest had to go to court in a teen
suicide case. The parents sued the band because the kid had their
record playing when or before he died. The case was thrown out (for
stupidity, I'd guess.)

I've forgotten which singer it was, but sometime in the 80's he had to go
to court on a similar trial. When asked something along the lines of "Do
you encourage your listeners to commit suicide?"
"No..I wouldn't have anyone to buy my records then, would I?"

Just to let everyone feel a little better. My friend is in some wellness
class at school, and they were taking a stress test. He was reading
down, and noticed "Actively plays a role playing game" -30!!!! That's
extremely good for the test I guess. Anyway, we were kinda figuring,
he'd prolly have keeled over from too much stress by now. So in some
weird way, I've helped save my friends life. :) After all this somewhat
sad news about RPGs in the media and society, I thought I'd try to cheer

That, is one of the big questions...

Does playing out your fantasies make you more stable? Or are RPGs more
attractive to more "stable" people anyway....?

Yeh, but it usually gets blown out of all proportion once or twice a

Hmm...Cool.

I've got a fairly highstrung friend who plays RPG's. If they supposedly
lower stress, I'd hate to see how he'd be WITHOUT rpg's. I think he'd be
spending a great deal of his time "Going Postal" over stuff...

What disturbs me most about all this is the repeated tendancy of people
to blame something, look for a simplistic answer, when these crimes happen.
Nobody wants to hear that the kid was bent in the head because his mother
ignored him, his father told him he was a failure, or worse still, he
slipped through the cracks of society. God forbid people have to face the
fact that society creates these monsters. They want a nice simple answer
that they can blame it on. And all through history people have picked
inanimate objects, mysterious curses or some similiar thing. Anything to
keep them from looking at each other and asking the dreaded quesion, "Is
humanity really this savage?" Oh... he was demon possessed, or she was a
witch or.... you get the point. It struck me how moronic we are when I was
reviewing some legal material the other day. In America if a weapon (gun,
knife, or whatever) is used in a crime, it must be destroyed. The crime
doesn't have to involve injury, if you get caught carrying a concealed
pocket knife for example, even if you are found innocent, the pocket knife
still gets destroyed. Essentially what the law implies is that since the
object was involved in a crime, it is now somehow "evil" and so we must
destroy it. Makes you wonder just how "civilized" humanity is, doesn't
it? Oops.... looks like I just asked that forbidden question, wonder
someone is going to stone me to death now ; ) Just my 2 yen.

To snip this down into a true statement....No one want to be
responsible for their kids. Look at all of the US laws that restrict
something or other and you'll see it. (like the new FDA rule about
tobacco products, the whole internet thing, etc...)

Actually, several years ago during the Patricia Bulling/BADD fiasco,
several Psychologists/Psychiatrists were quoted in national medical
