Well, looking at the group lately, very few messages were on it,
and made me decide to post this.
i am considering buying a couple of different roleplaying games.
( not all of them, only one or two. ) I was wondering if anybody has
played, heard rumors, or read material on these games:
Space hulk
Macross II
Star wars
Kryomek
Car wars
Death race
Also, I wanted to know if anyone else has ever played the Call of
Cthulhu game, I have before, and wanted to know what anyone else thought
about it. I personally think it is great if you like H.P. Lovecraft.
The monstors in it can really make any character a meat puppet or cannon
fodder.

A bit depressing after a while. You always _know_ that your characters
can only win in the short term. In the long term, the best result you
can hope for is to go mad (and start a new character).

Our most gripping adventure was a real rush, though. One by one, the
party was tricked into reading the Revelations of Glaaki. I think two
people survived.

It's a tactical board game, not an RPG, and a really fun one at that. Think
Aliens with marines in powered armor.

JOHANNA> Macross II

It's Palladium, which is to say, it sucks rocks.

JOHANNA> Star wars

Really nice, if you can deal with the movie cast being gods compared to any
PC :).

JOHANNA> Kryomek

Never heard of it.

JOHANNA> Car wars

Another fun tactical game. Autoduel is the RPG (never played it). Our
Fearless Leader Robert Hayden will have a different take on the topic :).

JOHANNA> Death race

Never heard of it aside from the movie "Deathrace 2000" :).

I personally refuse to play in a game in which Cthulu actually exists, for
the simple reason, "why bother? it's all for naught in the end, anyway."

Yeah, I have played Call of Cthulhu before. It is indeed a great game,
with insanity and/or death lurking around every twisted corner.

I've never played Kryomek but I've had a look at it, and I've read plenty
of reviews, and from what I can tell, it's a pretty good game. It's a
skirmish game, as you know, designed for use with the 25mm miniatures
produced by Fantasy Forge, which has now, incidentally, gone bankrupt, but
the directors formed a new company, and have bought back the license for
Kryomek. The rules are meant to be pretty cool, but the gem is the back-
ground and setting, which is reminiscent of Aliens - humans vs. slavering
aliens, basically, in the far future, when humans have colonised most of
the galaxy. Really good gritty sci-fi...

I once played an inspired 1920's CoC scenario at Leprecon '92, I think it
was... (Leprecon is an annual convention in Trinity College, Dublin, Tir
na nOg) It was set in Antartica, but me and a friend held up the start of
the game for half an hour by insisting on mucking around in England for a
bit, despite divine intervention by the GM and so on... *grin*
We finally gave in after the GM threatened that he would make a point of
joining the group I was GMing for the Shadowrun competition the following
day... :)
There's also a brill 1990's scneario for Call of Cthulhu in the first
issue of The Last Province, the now-defunct Scottish roleplaying mag.

It's GW, so I won't touch it - doesn't mean it's not good.
> Macross II
?
> Star wars
Excellent game. The rules are simple, consistent and easily learned,
and *everyone* knows the background. A personal favourite.
> Kryomek
A wargame rather than a boardgame - 25mm sci-fi. Nice setting and
background.
> Car wars
Another goody. Many claim this is not a true RPG, but I think there is
just enough depth to play it as an RPG. Excellent, darkly humorous
setting. Good if you just want a tactical combat game with fast cars.
Another personal favourite.
> Death race
?
> Also, I wanted to know if anyone else has ever played the Call of
Yeah, it can be really scary (especially playing by candlelight).
I won't play this anymore, partly for religious reasons, but mainly
because in the long run you cannot win. You either go insane or die.
Sooner or later.
