That's why I put the "(bit tricky)" behind the focus. But that brings me
to another question: is a fetish present in astral space when the
magician isn't? In other words: can you cast a physical spell to ground
out through a fetish?
The essence cost is of course a problem, but it could be worth
considering for a copbat mage or a burned-out mage.

The enchantment process creates a permanent link from astral space to the
object and will therefore make the fetish present on both planes.
So, yeah, that means a physical spell will ground out every time.

Arghh!! Fetishes are not present in astral space any more than a knife.
The fetish is simply an object which (psychologically) aids spellcasting,
much as a sexual fetish is "required" for performance. The two derive
from the same anthropological term. It is a ritual item, as gaesa are
ritual actions. It is very real to the spellcaster, since magic is
channeled through the caster's person (psyche). It is thus also real to
the guy getting hit by the force 8 mana bolt.

I'd say having a reusable fetish implanted defeats the purpose of the
fetish. It's something you have to have to cast the spell. Why not
just enchant your jawbone and say it's a detection spell fetish? Think.
Not just about what would work, but about game balance. Having a
permanently implanted reusable fetish would be tantamount to gaining
a level of force on the spell. This is silly.

In terms of balance, though, if you want to allow such activity, make
it equivalent to a spell lock or something (evil grin).

No you can not ground through a fetish - its not active, its just a crutch to
use with a spell, you can ground through an active fetish focus.

No....The process of enchantment is used to make new fetishes and what that
does is to build a permanent link into astral space for that object.
Therefore, a spell WOULD ground out.
