Hoi Chummers,

I am preping an adventure set in Berlin so, I need
some help in getting some maps of Berlin. The Germany
Source Book si good for reference, however, I would
prefur to get in touch with someone who lives there
and speaks some english (sorry, but I need to be able
to understand all the information I getting) This way
I could accuratly portray the Berlin of our beloved
Shadowrun Universe.

What I need is maps of gang location (as you would
have placed them), what type of hardware they would
use. I have not fully read the Germany Sourcebook yet
and I am not sure if they detail the protected areas
of Berlin. So, if I could get maps and locations of
those it would help out greatly.

I am also in need of common phrases that might be used
by security officers (that includes police) and slang
used by street gangs (How to pronounce them would be
greatly appreciated as well).

Oh, an lastly, I need names. Common names, uncommon
names and rare names.

Thank you for all your time and all the help.

Dingo

Have you thought of tourist guides, such as Lonely Planet books? They're
not too expensive, and give quite a lot of information about the areas
they cover.

Go to http://plastic.dumpshock.com/software, then press the GameName
button. Download both the software and the German name file, and you can
make German names to your heart's content :)

The locations and the hardware availlable in Berlin is in the Germany
sourcebook.
As the names of the city quarters haven't changed, you can pinpoint them
with a road map. I suggest the "Falk Stadtpläne", as these are the most
accurate,
but I don't know if they are available at your homeplace.

I'd suggest that the street-gangs are using, basically, the same hardware
as the Seattle based gangs. That is: Few implants, if any,, mostly light
and
old weaponry.
Though in Germany the Kalasnikov, H&K, Ruger and other European weapons are
dominant.

This is just from memory, I can come back to you at Monday with more:

Phrases:
"Ihren Führerschein und Fahrzeugpapiere, bitte." - "Your driving
license
and vehicle papers, please."
"Ihren Ausweis, bitte." - "Your ID, please."
"Sie können passieren." - "You can proceed."
"Weitergehen, es gibt hier nichts zu sehen." - "Move on, nothing to see
here."
"Stehen bleiben oder ich schiesse." - "Stop moving, or I shoot."
"Sie sind festgenommen." - "You are under arrest."

Some Names:

French names, like de Meziere are common in this part of Germany, too, due
to Hugenott immigrants.

Note in general:

The Alliance of German States is still a very, er, present government. If
you don't have a SIN, you are comitting a crime, you need allowances for
all sorts of things (especially weapons and cyberimplants).
DidS2 is going into detail on this point.

You can probably buy a map of Germany and/or Berlin from a major book store
as well as some travel/map stores (ie: Chapters up in Canada carries maps
from around the world) or try visiting the German consulate in your area and
tell them you are planning a trip to Berlin in the spring or something and
ask for information/tourist/travel guides they might have

>From your message, it looks like you want to add some more 'realism' to your
campaign, by having things where they should be, etc...

For that, I was going to say two things:
1) If your players don't know the area and you don't know the area, does it
really matter if you put the seedy part of town in what is really the
currently ritzy part of town?
2) Remember, that things change in time. Out here, the seediest and
crummiest part of town 10-15 years ago (loads of strip bars, streets lined
with hookers and drug dealers, xxx stores galore, etc) is now one of the
best parts of the city... with most of the area being leveled and replaced
by high rise condos (selling for over $1M on the average), hgue
shopping/dining complexes, theatres, etc.
So if you want to draw up your own Berlin based on how it is today to
conserve "realism" - this could actually accomplish the absolute opposite:
the better parts of town today, with extensive housing and therefore limited
room for upgrade/improvements (not to mention, to upgrade an apartment
complex would mean kicking all those people out, makeing it even more
difficult and costly), will actually be well over 50 years old, more run
down and with a higher crime rate in the 2060

Just a thought...

Clint
