accent is. The weggie accent is certainly *stereo*typical :)

Actually, I'm curious as to what is the specific thing it is about an
accent people find incomprehensible. Is it the dialect or the actual
accent?

I have found that when talking to people they find the greatest
difficulty in working out the words that I am using. The other time
people have difficulty with my accent is when I'm a tad under the
afluence of incohol. But that is mainly cause the speed goes up a bit!

OK, so there isn't a "typical" accent. The Glaswegian accent is taking
things to extremes though.

Most Scots have a MUCH softer accent....

In the case of Rab, I think it's more the accent, and the fact that he's in
a permanent state of inhebriation, rather than the dialect.

It's pretty easy to understand what certain words mean from the context...

I find it's a combination of both; mostly the accent. Generally, with a
little intelligence you can work out any dialectic slang from context
(or if all else fails, ask them WTF they meant :D), but accents make
things really hard. You should try talking to my boyfriend's father - 40
years in South Africa, and he sounds like all the words are coming out
the bottom of his chin - THROUGH his beard...

Due to exposure (Rab C Nesbitt and Billy Connolly) the "typical"
Scottish accent is the Glaswegian.

Personally, I can cope with it, but then I'm originally from Perth
anyway :)

Mixture of both, I think. The accent makes the dialect harder to work
out.

My accent apparently moves northwards in direct proportion to the amount
of alcohol I've consumed (having been raised by parents from Perth and
Aberdeen, raised in Newcastle and spending years in Scunthorpe and
Lincolnshire).

According to Hazel, when I pass through the Midlands I'm drunk. When I
cross the border, she knows she'll need to carry me to bed :)

I'd say it's the dialect. The way I understand it, an accent means you
pronounce words slightly differently, while dialect is both that and using
words and expressions that aren't "standard" for the language. That last
bit can lead to some confusion if you're talking to someone who doesn't
know your dialect (trust me, in daily life I speak a dialect of Dutch
and lots of imports have trouble understanding it. But I say that's
tough luck for them -- they chose to move here :)

Okay, now I have to jump in:

Euro dialect, sounds like America. We have 'dem good ole boys, dat can't
talk wort' a fourth grader.

Then we have these northerners with there two dollar words like
onomonapiea (I think). More than once, confusion was incited. And don't
even think about immigrants and their dialects.


Now using Gweedo the Killer Pimp ver. 3.1 sporting such features as:
A poleyester leisure suit, platform shoes, a pink cadillac, fuzzy dice,
and a gold tooth!
