If they're that close to making an MW movie, how much further behind
could a Shadowrun movie be?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Devlin to Lead MechWarrior®
to the Big Screen

February 28, 2003 (LOS ANGELES) — WizKids Media announced today an
agreement with Hollywood screenwriter and producer Dean Devlin to
produce a movie based on the MechWarrior universe. Devlin has
produced films such as Stargate, Independence Day, Godzilla, The
Patriot and Eight Legged Freaks. Paramount Pictures is in
negotiations to option the property from WizKids for Devlin’s
Electric Entertainment. “Whether I write the script, help with the
script or direct, I’m crazy about the material. This is a real
passion project for me,” Devlin said. Devlin would like to get the
movie into theaters within 24 months.

“The film, in many ways, will be a coming of age story,” said Jordan
Weisman, WizKids CEO. “It’s set 40 years after the ’Mech wars have
ended, and introduces a group of young heroes in their early 20s who
have grown up in peaceful and prosperous times.” Weisman said the
sci-fi universe he created 20 years ago was heavily influenced by
the relationships that World War II pilots developed with the
fighter planes they flew. The movie will focus on The Republic, a
melting pot of people similar to the United States, and how factions
in The Republic and forces outside of it are hoping to restart the
’Mech wars of old.

The film is being produced in association with WizKids Media, the
film, television and interactive media subsidiary of WizKids LLC.
Weisman and WizKids Media President, Marc Sachnoff, will serve as
the executive producers along with Electric Entertainment’s Partner
and COO, Philippe Maigret. WizKids Media has recently set up the
Mage Knight™ franchise with Producer Mark Gordon (Saving Private
Ryan) and is currently shopping the Shadowrun® franchise with key
studios and creatives.

The MechWarrior brand has had a successful retail run with its
best-selling novels, toys, computer games and last year’s hit Xbox
game, MechAssault. Six months ago, WizKids released a MechWarrior
collectable miniatures game that has sold five million units to
date. Penguin Putman has already released the first two of a series
of 18 new novels based on the franchise, with the first novel
selling out and already into its second press run.

Could be a interesting movie. It has been so long since I have
read/played/or done anything with BattleTech that I don't even really
recall much of the history or anything like that. Yo much time with
Sahdowrun and a couple other games along with work and what ever. As
cool as BattleTech and MechWarrior were/are I myself am more intertested
in a Shadowrun movie. Oh well, the is .02 yen worth for now...

Very different animals, unfortunately. While giant robots have a built-in
audience and appeal to kids everywhere, elves with lasers is just confusing
to most.

But it should be a very fun movie. As I said somewhere else, it could have
terrible actors, a horrible script, and useless production, but as long as
it has good CG, it's going to do well.

Anybody remember 1990's Robot Jox <http://us.imdb.com/Title?0102800>;? My
oh my, that movie sucked ass on so many levels. This producer has
impressive enough credentials, but I'll have to wait and see how badly they
butcher MW before I'd want to see them even bother with an adaptation of
Shadowrun.

I dunno...look at Dungeons & Dragons. Fairly decent CG IMO (considering the
budget), but oh boy what a flop!

I like Straczynski's justification for sound in Babylon 5. When a space
craft explodes, if there is an atmosphere within it, the sound of the
explosion would be heard within it as it is dispursed into space. It all
just depends on where you put the microphone.

Just don't let him talk much or show his face that often. (He was suppose

Hmm yes, the age-old debate of why Hollywood insists on adding all those
annoyingly unrealistic SFX to space battle scenes. But IMO, and I think the
opinion of the general mass audience out there, is that while sacrificing
realism, you are adding to the atmosphere (no pun intended) of the scene. It
would be fine for visually-oriented people to watch, for example, the Death
Star attack in Episode IV without SFX (although enormously boring), but
auditory people would probably watch for about 10 seconds before totally
losing interest (or just becoming increasingly annoyed).

Never mind the sound justification. It was nice seeing space battles being played out as
something more then a world war 2 dog fight. None of this burning all your thrusters to
get behind your opponent. More a case of get moving then turn your thrusters off and just
point where you want to shoot.

But considering how much computing power has grown
(has anybody compared 286 vs 686?), I think it is illogical
that there is no sound in a battle.

In fact, the human needs sound to orient itself, as well as vision.
But unlike vision, hearing works 360 degrees, and the ob-board computers
would have been adapted to suit this.

Actually, I think he'd be very good in a shadowrun movie. At least, as the
character who gets melted by a toxic wave spell during the first couple of
minutes.

I'd pay to see that ;-)

Hmmm.... being overseas, you get to see interesting things. If they do this
Mechwarrior movie like the first Gundam series (where the cool robots are
not the main focus, but rather a tool used by the character to achieve his
ends) then it could work. Of course I'll have to see how that live action
Gundam movie did first...
(for those wondering, it was put out by Bandai, done in english, has live
actors with CGI Mecha.)

One possible explanation* (which works with the TIE fighter at least) is this:
The engines in Star Wars are Ion based (or rather they're called Ion
Engines) Ions are charged particles and when a charge moves it creates a
magnetic field, Therefore the engines on a Star Destroyer or a starfighter
put out a considerable magnetic field.
Microphones work on the reverse principle, a magnet moving in a coil
creates a current. Magnets and magnetic fields interact therefore the
microphones pick up the ionic disturbance created by the engines which the
speakers then translate into sound.
Laser fire is more difficult but...

* Oh, did I say explanation, I meant excuse <Grin>

Disclaimer

These messages were posted a long time ago on a mailing list far, far away. The copyright to their contents probably lies with the original authors of the individual messages, but since they were published in an electronic forum that anyone could subscribe to, and the logs were available to subscribers and most likely non-subscribers as well, it's felt that re-publishing them here is a kind of public service.
