I'm guessing you're a Aussie. I haven't known anyone
to call It National Service, except "Nashos" (National
servicemen) as they call them at home, either that or
your a Pom ;)

Did anyone else, (like the Americans) call
conscription national service?

South Africa did, while we still had it. It ended the year before I

Here in the States, National Service sometimes means civilian service as an
alternative to the draft. Odd.

"National Service" in lieu of the draft in the US....Sure, Anders?

It was after my time, but my understanding is that you were allowed to
choose employment in a civillian "worthy cause" as lieu of the draft if
you were a conscientious objector (morally opposed to all violence or to
all government service, like the Quakers and Shakers) or (possibly, not
sure) you were classified as physically unfit for any military service
(WWII-era designation was 4-F).
