The obvious solution is to put a blank line above and below your own
response, like I did here. It visually separates the quote and the reply,
and allows even people who can't handle their own mailers to make clear
what is what.

It isn't with the generally accepted system either. (That is, generally
accepted before the unwashed masses came and invaded the net with
sub-standard mailers. No smiley here on purpose.).
