I get constant shit trying to cross the border because I don't have an
actual drivers license, and just have an ID card. It's a natural assumption
that because I don't drive I've had my license taken away for some reason
or another, and thus I'm a criminal.

Reminds me of trying to get a hotel room in the US in 1998: the woman
behind the counter wouldn't accept my _passport_ as valid ID because it
didn't have my address in it...

I once saw a young asian woman in a bar here use a passport as ID
to buy alcohol (which you need to be 21 to do here in Michigan).

ngah

It's amazing how many people don't know that a passport is as valid as you
can get when it comes to ID.

Nah, it's amazing how many _Americans_ don't know that a passport is as
valid as you can get when it comes to ID. <grin> After all, America is all
there is to the world ... what's anyone need a passport for?

(Sorry all you yanks, I couldn't resist <grin>)

Unfortunately, you're right. In the US, if you can't drive, you're pretty
much a second-class citizen. A LOT of jobs require a driver's license, as
does doing just about everything else except maybe buying food. Yes, a
driver's license. Not a state ID, not a passport, a driver's license.
