Clearly he means to include the Republic as the
forerunner of the empire.

This is precisely what he means. If you asked a 'Byzantine'
what his nationality was, he would have said 'Roman' without
hesitation.

People still do refer to themselves as Roman in some parts of Europe.
In Greece a Hellenic Soldier was raising the flag of Hellas and some
children asked him what it was and he said the flag of Hellas and they
said, "We are not Hellennics, we are Romans."

Actually I should apologise, I posted without taking a breath
and cooling off after a pretty virulent discussion on another list.

In that case consider my posts not send. I must admit that affairs at
home did put me too much on the defensive in this, and subsequently
apologize for my reply.

(Well I did wait three hours before sending, but when everything goes
wrong I guess that's not long enough... :)
