You just press ALT and type 0165 and then let go of the ALT key.
Alternatively, if you have a windoze system with the character map on it,
you can find it (and other nifty itemsT) in there.

Have you tried the Character map utility? It's not present in all fonts,
but it's there.

Hold down your ALT key and enter 0165. It should give you a ¥ character
(at least on US keyboards).

I don't have a problem in word (or most other apps) I had it set up on
ctrl+alt+Y but for some reason it doesn't seem to work when I write mail!
cheers for all the responses

And mine only works if I use the num pad!

On a Windows machine, this is easily done by holding down Alt and pressing
the numbers 0, 1, 6 and 5 on the numeric keypad. If it doesn't work, make
sure NumLock is on and try again.

(BTW, if anyone knows how to achieve the same on a Linux box, please let me
know -- I haven't been able to discover any way myself :( )

Try a utility called xkeycaps. With it you can interactively
look at what your keyboard produces and change the key codings.

xkeycaps comes with instructions, of course. I used it just a few days ago
to map my laptops caps lock key to control key, because caps lock is just
useless.

This will obviously only help when using X. I don't have much experience
with fiddling around with text consoles, as I use them very rarely.

Of course, your font must have the character, but that will probably not
be a problem, if you see the yen sign above. B-)

I have been able to create the ¥ symbol by holding down the ALT key and
pressing 157 on the NUM pad with numlock turned on. If I remember right
I was able to use the same combo on a Mac system but I will not say for
sure. That was a long time ago and I do not know anyone with a Mac
anymore. I do not know if it will work on a Linux box but I say give it
a try and let me know.

That works too, because the yen symbol is #157 in the old IBM character
set, IIRC, but is #165 in ISO-8859 character sets, which Windows TrueType
fonts use(d); the distinguish between the two, you need to type a 0 first
to get the ISO-8859 characters.

It doesn't, which is why I asked :)

Both methods work on Windows.
