From Slashdot....

Reuters is reporting that Sony has been granted 2 patents, both
describing 'Method and system for generating sensory data onto the
human neural cortex'. These are patents 6,729,337 and 6,536,440. The
patents go on to 'describe a technique for aiming ultrasonic pulses at
specific areas of the brain to induce sensory experiences such as
smells, sounds and images'. The story was first broken by New Scientist
magazine." Commentary also available via Ars Technica.

This would be a simsense patent, not (necessarily) a Matrix patent.

The ultrasonic nature of this makes me ponder a "simsense gun".

Yes, I realized after I had sent it I had typed the wrong thing :)

Now that would be cool. Particularly if the sim sense was the current
scene all nice and peaceful. Kind of like the old, rig the camera to
keep looping over the same bit of empty room footage, but instead your
getting the Security guards brain to loop over the same bit of Im
seeing an empty room.

had to do a lot of copy and paste to get to the article.

I have encountered few ideas that I can't work into
something that I delude myself into thinking as being
to my advantage. In fact I think I might not
understand what you mean when you say "workable" or
"practicality", as this is a mailing list and we're
just sharing thoughts on a variety of subjects from a
variety of angles, not pandering to anyone's
particular notion of what should be said (unless they
hold the position of ADMIN, as these people have the
authority to ban you from participating in a given
discussion).

Your suggestion to look for a different mailing list
is hereby returned to sender, as it seems you feel the
need to make such suggestions where they are utterly
unwarranted. Consider that such words can be construed
as hurtful and unappreciative of someone's attempts at
contributing to a discussion. Also note that I might
take your words as a precedent for any future textual
exchanges I could have with you or other participants
of this mailing list. You hold the responsibility to
know the effect and content of your own words, in this
case meaning that they might be repeated to someone
you didn't intend them for.

cheers,

Jan Jaap

By virtue of your authorship you are implying the
existence of an opinion regarding an opinion regarding
an opinion, even if you're using my words. Ergo: you
smell.

cheers,

Jan Jaap

Shouldn't that be:

cheers,

?

;)

Sorry, couldn't resist. Lately just about every single one of your
posts has reminded me of the Friends episode where Ross shows Joey how
to access the thesaurus feature on his computer :)

Point duly noted.

Assume it's probably due to the Philosophy of Mind
module on self-knowledge I was taking. Maybe I should
stop letting my everyday concerns leak into
discussions about fantasy and live the 2065 every day.
Not impossible, but it would probably get me locked up
if I picked a insufficiently boring role.

cheers,

and men
