actually the "Standard" measuring system isn't "random". Its a 12
based
system that has been around a long long long time. Granted, a 10 based
system is much easier to mentally calculate.. but it doesn't mean the
Standard system was without logic in its design. Although calling it
"Standard" is a wee bit pretentious.

Hmm... 12 based... I see:

1 mile 60 yards
1 yard = 3 feet
1 foot = 3 hands
1 hand = 4 inches

The only 12 based I can find is if you drop the hands, and then get 1 foot 12 inches.

Lars,

Inch should be derived from the word ounce (Latin is uncia) meaning one twelth
(1/12)

A foot is supposed to be 12 inches, so I guess there's the base 12 connection
you're looking for, but apart from that I don't know frag all about metric or
imperial. I measure using tablespoons and teaspoons! However, if the basic
measurement is 1/12th of something, then your little table make sense, I
suppose.

However, don't ask me to explain fluid ounces which are once again different on
either side of the atlantic.

Anyway...talk about SR topics going waaaay off on a tangent!

You're being silly
1 foot inches
1 yard 6 inches
1 mile c,360 inches

see the 12's now?

If 1 mile would be 72 or 60 inches then I could see them, but so its a
coincidence with the foot and the yards ;)
