This is totally off topic but I'm sure you won't mind. :)

Basically, I'm going over to America this Summer on a University exchange
programme which allows me to be able to work. So I'll be travelling a bit
but I'm also hoping to settle down in a proper US town (not any
touristville place) and perhaps get a job for a month or so.

I was wondering whether anyone could suggest any good real-American tonws
I might look into where it may be possible to rent a room from a resident
family or such and possibly get a job of some sort e.g. in a shop or such
like? Any help would be appreciated, and hey maybe I'll be able to make
GenCon!

Cheers!

I'm not quite sure what "real-American" is supposed to mean,
however if you can make it out to the West Coast of the US, try up here in
Seattle. We've got rooms aplenty to look at the classifieds, and it's
about average difficulty to find a job. The Hampton Roads area in Virginia
(Norfolk, Virginia Beach, etc.) is nice as well, although a trifle warm
and muggy in the summertime.

Well, Denver Colorado currently has an unemployment rate of 3%
(that's very low) so you can find a job pretty easy. It might be in
a shopping mall or a fast food restaraunt though. On the other hand
rent prices are a little high. The easiest way to find a resident
family is to contact a church of your religion in whichever city
you're going to (most churches have web pages now).

Cool..That kind of travel is always the best..You aren't rushed to try and
see everything all at once...

>I was wondering whether anyone could suggest any good
>real-American towns

Hmmm..Now that is sort of a tall order...You want plain old town without
being tourist centered....That sounds kinda boring...For that I could
sugest Levelland, Texas..it is about as far from a tourist center as you
will be able to get..and it is 30 minutes from Lubbock [a slightly larger city]
which has an airport you could fly into..it is a farming community..But if
you catch it between graowing seasons it looks as though you ended up
on Mars..Red sand as far as the eye can see..IT is so flat you can see
the curvature of the Earth in all directions.....
If you want some place a little more interesting..I suppose Grand
Junction, Colorado isn't too bad...There is a little bit of the Tourist thing
happening...But not by much...Lots of out doors type things around
hunting, fishing, boating, skiing [both kinds], they have finally opened
some paintball fields, there is a State level College here..If you are into
palentology this is a good area to come to....It is also an agriculture based
community..but we are up past the 100K mark for the county..So there
are lots of people roaming around And we aren't too very far from
Denver 4-6 hour drive away [depending on how fast you drive] ans
about the same distance from Salt Lake City, Utah..Utah...

>I might look into where it may be possible to rent a room from a resident

Well.. Around Grand Junction there is usually this sort of rental arange
ment available somewhere...I don't have any specific info as I have
never really looked..But there are a couple of hotels that have longer
term plans...

Any help would be appreciated, and hey maybe I'll be able to make
GenCon!

As for GenCon..For me I got luck and landed some cheap tickets from
Denver to Chicago..but the prices are always going up..And I will have to
drive to Denver to use them...

But really it all depends on what you are specifically looking for...The
parameters you have listed so far kinda leaves things a bit wide
open...So if you narrow it down a bit...Like list some of the things you
want to be able to do while you are here...other than get a summer job
and rent a room...we might be able to narrow things down a bit...I have
traveled quite extensively and have lived in a wide variety of places and
have a preferance for small towns myself..but I really miss the
accessability of larger city living...

I'm sure that everyone will suggest their hometown, and not being
above such things, I will do likewise. Pittsburgh is a great place
to live. It's got everything (more or less) that every big city has,
but its got a small town atmosphere and ethnic diversity that can't
be beat. I could go on, but I'll refrain from doing so on the list.

Other good places to live include Nashville, Philadelphia, and
Chicago.
