It's early, about 2 a.m., when I get the call from my fixer.

"That you, Raven?" he asks me.

"Yeah. What's the word, chummer?"

"We gotta talk. Meet me at our favourite bar."

"You got it."

Our favourite 'bar' happens to be the coffee house attached to the local
Stuffer Shack, but no one else needed to know that. He was there when I
arrived, as cool and non-descript as ever. I greeted him like an old
friend, rather than like a business associate, simply to keep anyone else
who might have been taking notes off guard. Slipping into the seat across
from him with my soycaf, I lowered my voice. "What's the word?"

He reached into his coat for a moment before answering, and I could hear
the hum of a white noise generator start up. "You won't like it,
Raven. It's about your chummers... you know, Dvixen, and what is it, Some
Paolo?"

"ThatPaolo." I corrected him.

"Right," he continued, "Anyway, since you were their teammate, I figured
you oughtta know, they're not coming back."

My face must've dropped a little, despite any attempt I made to keep
looking bright and animated with my "chummer".

"They got geeked?" I asked.

"Worse." he said.

I lost any thought of looking cheerful then. "Frag... you mean some corp
got them? Who? Ares? Shiawise? Lone Star? If I get the others..."

"No, chummer." he said. "It's not that good, either."

By now my patience was wearing more than thin. It took all I had to keep
my voice down. "Listen, don't slot me around, tell me what the frag you're
talking about!"

"What I'm talking about," he said, cool and levelly, "is a corporate job
with all the benefits, 2.3 kids and a nice 2-bedroom condo in a double-A
rated suburb."

My face froze. "That bad, huh?"

He nodded. "Could say there was a big hitch in any plans you might have
had."

I nodded, giving him a fake handshake I didn't feel up to and leaving my
full cup of soycaf on the table. This was one of those times, in this
biz, that you couldn't do anything but put it behind you, turn, and walk
away.
