It's not directly Shadowrun related, but I thought an item of this =
magnitude to the gaming industry would be worth posting here. It's =
been confirmed as legitimate by the net reps for both MTG-L and =
ADND-L.

Yesss... I heard....
It's on quite plainly on rec.games.frp.misc.....

(GOD I wish people wouls learn to format correctly and NOT spam.....)

I'm not reading this, it's too unreadable...

Who CARES anyway? They can't do much of a worse job with it than TSR did...

(Even doing what they did with their entire RPG line, i.e. cancelling it,
would improve it a lot.... No more useless "The Shambling Mound Handbook"
type things for a start.....)

"Mazes and Monsters" was the actual title. ;o)

The movie was LOOSELY based on the non-fiction novel Dungeon Master: The
Disappearance of James Dallas Eggbert the actual story is of a genius kid
(who happens to heavily be into D&D) gets into college at the age of 14 or
such. He ends up vanishing, apparently with plans to commit suicide, and
the detective hired to find him ends up uncovering a live action D&D game
in the tunnels under the college. Etc...etc...etc...

Hmm... Why does that make me think of something I once read in a
gaming magazine about Spellfire (T$R's answer to M:TG) appearing like an
attempt to kick the legs from under the CCG market?

WoTC didn't post it here. It was forwarded on by a listmember,
and while it may be strictly off-topic, it is of general interest
to many of the members of this list. (Myself included..)

Heck, I still play AD&D on a regular basis. The game system isn't
that bad, but T$R earned the reputation of wanting to sell more
product, whether the product was ready/worthy of production or
not. Add to that the fact that it's _very_ easy for inexperienced
role-players to degenerate to Hack -n- Slash using the system,
and it's easy to see how it got a bad rap.

Just my 2 cents..

Uh, I believe it was based on the book "Mazes and Monsters" by err..forgot

be interested in seeing it, if it was..

I vaguely recall it being made into a made for TV movie. An afterschool
special or something like that. I must have been in Jr. High, so, maybe 16,
17 years ago. Good luck finding it.

It came on TBS (some cable station in the US) about a month ago during a Tom
Hanksfest. I remember watching it when it first came out and didn't really
like it, but I tried watching it a month ago and just couldn't get through
it. So anyway, I don't know how TV works exactly, but TBS may have bought
it up for a while, so it may come on again.

When it came out I was in grade school. I convinced our project potential
teacher to let us play D&D as part of the class and she agreed. We played
for most of the year, but the big Dungeons & Dragons scare came on, with
Mazes & Monsters in there somewhere, and the principal of the school
pressured our teacher come up with something else to do. But, I got to keep
all the books which my parents originally bought and donated to the school
as a tax write-off! Cha-Ching! (Otherwise, we wouldn't have been able to
play because the school wouldn't buy the books).

I watched it several years ago when it was on TV here, and the two
impressions it left on me were that a) it looked like a movie made to show
the evil of roleplaying games, and b) it was made by people who didn't
know shit about them.
I'd taped it because I thought (from the description in the TV guide) that
it might be a cool movie, but first chance I got, I taped another movie
over it.

Disclaimer

These messages were posted a long time ago on a mailing list far, far away. The copyright to their contents probably lies with the original authors of the individual messages, but since they were published in an electronic forum that anyone could subscribe to, and the logs were available to subscribers and most likely non-subscribers as well, it's felt that re-publishing them here is a kind of public service.
