Not really. It's got a fairly limited storyline: kill aliens, develop
technology, kill more aliens. You could probably flesh it out with
missions to deal with alien infiltrators, making it possible to actually
fly a captured UFO (and thus give a reason for bringing those scientists
and engineers along on a mission), but eventually your campaign leads to
going to Cydonia and opening a can of kick-ass on the aliens...

(There's a fairly obvious sequel to X-COM, of course, which is to take your
ship full of trained telepaths and plasma-rifle-armed flying-suit-wearing
soldiers and hovertanks off to take over the alien worlds to secure a source
of Elirium for mankind...)

But I really do enjoy imagining the various interactions going on at a
role-playing level, such as:

* Letting a chryssalid into a room containing a cow as a demonstration of
why the X-COM project needs more funding.
* The expressions of alien commanders being called on the carpet for losing
entire battleships to Terran natives.

Of course, you wouldn't necessarily get to play the whole campign...
Remember, the game usually takes several years to complete (In game time).
You play a single soldier (or squad), and try to simply survive...

You have to remember taht there are still LOTS of RP possiilities...

Afetr all, we all know what happens in the end of Star Wars, but it's still
a very successful RPG, and one that I personally enjoy.

Of course there's lots more variety to SW, but who says you can't expand
the X-Com game into a more realistic world?

Is X-com 3 out yet? i know there was one sequel out a year ago or so, and
it took place under the oceans, with a different group of Aliens (who were,
of course, immune to all the cool weapons you created in game one, or that
tech doesn't work under water). There was a second sequeal planned, but I
don't know if it ever came out...

XCOM 3: *The Apocalypse* (Funny I have that voice that does big film
voice overs in my mind when I write that!) is due out in Spring of this
year.

It looks like it is even better suited to be an SR game engine. The
combat includes lots of new features including use of vehicles,
crawling, climbing (swimming?), realistic building gravity (you can blow
them up and watch them collapse!), all set in a big urban environment
with gangs, police and corrupt (by aliens presumably) officials are
there to be investigated.

Sounds good to me ;)

Okay, Low down on the Xcom games....((in case you didn't know))
X-Com Enemy Unknown
1st in the series KICK ASS game I played it solid for a week...when I say
solid I mean 20hrs a day for 7days.
X-Com II terror from the deep.
2nd in the series, Never actually completed this one but I did have a go at
converting it to a roleplaying game when I got bored of it. but like many of
my projects it lost momentom and kinda died.
X-Com Apocolypse....*rushes to get the magazine* Hmmmm 1996 review?
ETA fourth quarter.
Pre rendered images as " The visuals were the only thing that let the other
two down"
Quote Julian Gollop "This time the combat will take place in real time,
rarther than being turn based."
Plans are afoot for network, Modem and serial play. :)
NOTE: "Character interaction [RP?] features more largley this time and theres
a whole new vehicle combat section in addition to the tactical level combat."

OKay there it is quote direct form PCGamer Jan 96
and unless the game has missed all the shops I go to it missed the deadline.
