Someone brought up the notion that Aborigines would have become the upper
class in Australia. I agree that they would have become the dominant
culture, the same way the NAN did in North America and due to similar
circumstances. However, I doubt that the Aborigines would have become
materialistic enough to covet the white man's wealth. Like their American
counterparts, they would reclaim the land but continue to use it with
traditional respect mixed with modern techniques. They would be rich in the
sense of controlling the land, but I don't see tribal elder riding around in
Mitsubishi Nightskys.

On the development of the aborigines of Australia becoming
dominant, just one point of order. A recent PBS special on Dreamtime
stated that one problem is that there are only a handful of shaman's
left who still practice the old ways. Also the popluation itself is
dwindling.

But you have to consider that cultures like the Shaman's and
aborigines became more populus, since the re-emergance of magic. This was/is
definitly the case for Shamans in Native American tribes, and I would think
that it would also be the case for aborigines.

Couldn't this also be applied to the full-blooded Native American
population? Yet they have a good hunk of North America, which I imagine
is a far larger displacement of people than Australia if the easter seaboard
is still Federalist.

(Under current conditions...)

This is what I would imagine to happen as well. There would be probably a larger
area of land involved for the Aborigines, however since the land is sparsely
populated, there would definitely be less people displaced.

Currently the US population is about 15 times that of Australia. Unless that
changes radically, displacement would not be major problem logistically. Of course
people are often reluctant to give up their homes, so conflict can ensue here.

I side with Mike in saying that if the native Americans can come back into power
so can the Aboriginies. True, there are a lot less Aboriginies following their
old culture than NAs but looking at the population of Nas in the US today and
land they hold in 2050, I think that the Aboriginies would be able to take over
the outback of Oz again.

Cheers,
Matthew.
