The subject of paladins brings several ideas to my head. First, there
are the Tir Paladins, exclusively male elves, mostly magically active
(with some that are heavily cybered or both), a sort of Tir Secret
Service/Black Ops group. They are fanatical and supposedly some of the
best guys in the biz. I believe there are stats for them in various SR
runs (Super Tuesday or Shadows of the Underworld, but don't quote me
on it), but in general, they are phys ads and mages with Superior
stats relative to the PCs. There is little/no way a PC could be a Tir
Paladin, but hey, this is Shadowrun. I could see a Renraku arco/Bug
City campaign where a PC is an undercover Tir Paladin. The best
example from the books (and one of the runs) would be Speren
Silverblade (gotta love his sword, Argentine). Also, the Knights of
Harlech come to mind (from the London Sourcebook).

Second, there was a "Druidic paladin" character in my campaign who was
basically a Sun Druidic aspected mage. He wielded a powerful weapon
focus and had the usual complement of spells. Being a Sun Druid, he
espoused human virtue and hunted the "creatures of the night". He was
a pain in the ass for the other characters at some points (very nice
roleplaying by my players), but they generally tolerated him because
he kicked ass against paranormal animals and other magical threats.
Oh, and he (eventually) was the group's only magical support.

Third, how about a "tribal paladin", someone who follows a Totem or
Idol, but they are a physical adept or have no magical ability
whatsoever (I like the second idea, by far... better for role
playing). It would be similar to an adept of the shaman's way, but the
character acts more like an "avatar" for the Totem's interest in the
world. Really, at the core, a paladin is merely a fighter who
dedicates him/herself to a faith or belief. So perhaps...

Fourth, a religiously aspected mage, who believes his powers stem from
his faith. This would fall under the "psychic magic" and "religious
magic" rubrick, but I can definitely see a faith-based aspected mage.
This could get deadly, looking at the cults and religious events
surrounding the Year of the Comet.

Finally, perhaps a "Questor" or "Lightbringer" equivalent for
Shadowrun (for those Earthdawn fans out there)?
