This talk about extinct animals made me look up something, and in
the T.T. guide it says that extinct anmals have returned in the forests
of Oregon. However, it does not say what animals have returned. Of course
it is always up to the GM.

Another point to think about is that many animals are likely to
become (have become?) extinct between 1994 and The Awakening. Has anybody
come up with a list, by any chance? (I don't mean a modern Enviromental
group, but a Shadowrun list.)

Uh, considering that several hundred animals go extinct every day (most
of them insects), a list would be impossible to compile. It's the big
ones that get all the press coverage.

We can assume that the Florida Panther will be gone (only 40 or so left),
probably the Cal. Condor. Maybe the wild tiger. Probably a couple
species of the whale (although the smaller ones still do ok, such as the
Orca).

The two animals we know won't be gone, of course, are the lawyer and the
politician.

Well, the gorilla and the ostrich are extinct as far as I know. Don't
know about other animals, though.

Considering that ostrich herding (as a food animal) is such a growth
industry right now, I find that one hard to believe. Maybe wild ostrich,
though.

oh ps - the Florida Panther is making somewhat of a comeback, there are more
of them out there - but they are still a very endangered geographical
sub-species.

Well the Panther part is one of FASA's BIG mistakes (IMHO). As I have stated
before the panther, cougar, mountain lion and puma are ALL the same animal.
In PNA it states that the Saber-Tooth cat is the awaked form of the cougar or
mountain lion. In Tir Tairngire it states that the Panther went extinct in 2009
two years before the awakening and the coming of the saber-tooth cat.

Also - since the saber-tooth cat comes from the mountain lion - I would raise
the reaction to 5 or 6 and initiative to 3d6 - the mountain lion is a
VERY fast animals (especially reacting to things). They are known to take out
Jaguars (who can be up to twice their size) because they are so quick.

Yes - I do know that I have stated this before - but hey - Its one of my pet
peeves. Atleast they gave the sbaer-tooth cat round pupils and not slits.

Oh - and yes - the mountain lion etc (felis concolour) is the largest north
American cat - it also has the largest range of all north american pedators (it
takes up a big territory as its own) and of the the big cats it takes on animals
the most out of proportion to its size. A tiger will take on somthing 2 (maybe
three if it is a small tiger) times its size by it self. The mountain lion
will kill animals 3-4 times its size - this is why many Nativa American tribes
respect it so much - it is one of the earths besty predators (and FASA
definately hasn't done it justice)

The Ostrich shouldn't be extinct..Perhaps in the wild..The O-bird has
been reared as a farm animal for some time now and is one of the use

Yes, but in the next 60 years, we can expect a lot of people to get
tiresd of spending countless millions to save a few remaining cats. And
even though the Florida Panther is making a comback, if we don't continue
to help it, it's gone. I doubt with UGE and all that crap, that a few
cats are high on the list.

There's no drama in that. Let's propose that instead, in 1998, Joseph
Hawkins, a worker for the the State Environmental Protection Agency and
staunch animal rights activist [:-)], released into the wilds six of the
Florida Panthers under his care. Sacked from his job, he devoted the rest
of his life to protecting his former charges [... etc. etc.].

His dramatic actions bore fruit. Today, in 2054, the estimated
population of these magnificent animals is around 800.

[You could spice it up further with an unexplained upsurge in the
intelligence of these creatures, estimated to have happened around
2013. So that today, the animals now are suspected of actively

hunting human hunters in the wild.]

Actually, for one campaign I was running, I sent a run team after the
characters. One of the members of the opposing team was a panther
with orthoskin, muscle replacement, dikote replaced teeth and claws,
wired 'flexes, and an encephalon and whatever the other brain booster
was to jack up its INT. Boy, did they hate that.

Well, in one of the sourcebooks (I don't remember which one right now,
and I don't really feel like reading through about 10 to find it), I
believe a few folks are talking about ignorance or something. One of them
makes a comment about "sticking your head in the sand, like an ostrich.
But ostriches are extinct now." Or at least something close to that.

6 is a large enough breading population to set loose in the wild.

The two major causes of extinction for the panther are shrinking everglades and
fast moving vehicles on roads that go through the areas they habitat. To remedy
this they are biulding panther tunnnels under the roads. seriously :)

In the back of Paranormal Animals of Europe it details animals that can
be found in the Paranormal Animals of North America. Is this book for
1st Ed SR, cause I can't find it in any of the local gaming stores or
mail-order catalogues and I was wondering if it's still in print because
some of the animals sound cool.

Out of print. It was published in the SRI days, and does, in fact, have
some cool stuff in it. OTOH, many of the critters can be visualized from
their name, and you do have the stats.....

(If the name doesn't ring a bell, it probably isn't used as a sec-animal
anyway....)

It was published before SRII came out, but only minor stats need to be
changed to make it 2nd edition-compatible (explained in the back of SRII).
However, it's been out of print for some time now, so it might be hard to
find, yes.

What do you think of paranormal animals in shadowrun, at do not
appear in PAoNa or PAoE? I'm thinking of animals which aren't
dangerous put simply use paranormal abilities. For example flies
defending themselves from beein eaten by using electrecal charge
(just an example...). To what degree can I use those critters
without being laughable?

I'd say that depends on what you and your players think is
believable. If they have no problem with mice the size of
elephants and having all kinds of paranormal powers, you can go
for it (I wouldn't use these myself, but hey, my game isn't your
game :)

I think they would be funny but only if they don't appear too often.
Electrical flies are quite interesting, but if you
can't step into the woods without meeting paranormal animals
it's (IMHO) a bit "overloaded" (directly translated from German
into English).

One human in hundred has magic abilities and only a tenth of
those are fully magicians. I think it should not be very different in the SR fauna.

If creating new animals you should consider their chances of surviving
(glowing insects with no defensive abilities will be eaten up in a few years)
and gaming balance. Giant amoebas (3 Meter / 10 feet) which double every 4
hours will flood the continent!

If you have good ideas, I will be happy to see them

BTW, have a look at P. Anthony's Xanth Saga for some ideas.

I didn't think of using animals that are especially big or strong but which
are simply
paranormal. Why should only dangerous animals develop? There could also be harmless
ones that are only different from the normal species.
I could think of many paranormal species...but you're right, using them too often
would lessen the fun. But it could be really funny if sometimes (very seldom) strange
animals would appear.

Some possible species:

The elecrical flies, which I already mentioned

Frogs with cold aura (so insects would drop in front of them if they come near it...)

Birds which defend themselves with their shriek (what's this ability called again?)

Flying (REALLY flying) fish!

At the moment I'm really not very productive...can't think of other animals at the
moment...

And if there are immortal dragons or elves, maybe there are also immortal ladybugs,
only no one never notices...;-)
