Actually, there are no handgun rounds that will _reliably_ penetrate a
car door or body. This includes .44 magnum rounds. Some of the special
KTW or THV rounds will, but they are strictly controlled. If you have to
penetrate a car door or body, then you should use a rifle or shotgun
with slugs. Note that all of this is meant in police deadly force
situations. Under those conditions, reliably putting a felon down as
quickly as possible, firing through a car door with a handgun is
not likely to succeed.

Hell, most of the rounds fired by police in a gunfight miss anyway. Just
like with soldiers. I would hide behind a car door if it was available.
Better would be a 2 man fighting position in a full defensive perimeter.
Even better would not be getting shot at all :).
