PENTAGON HATCHES FLY ON THE WALL (JUN 18/DISCOVERY)

DISCOVERY NEWS -- A joint Pentagon and university research project
aims to develop the most lightweight autonomous robot in existence,
Discovery News reports.

The small robot, modeled after a housefly, recently received the
tiny mechanical wings necessary to achieve flight.

Scheduled for completion next year, the robot weighs only one-10th
of a gram, comparable to an average sized paper clip.

The study, "Controlled Biological and Biomimetic Systems," is funded
by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the Office of
Naval Research.

Kinda puts Renraku's Arachnid walkerdrone in the shade really doesn't it,
and it's autonomous; granted it's probably only capable of feeding itself
and flying round avoiding obstacles but still!
I wonder if the guys at the pentagon who decide which projects have
potential for military applications and therefore get funding watch a lot of
cyberpunk movies, hey maybe some of them even play Shadowrun and are even
now working toward the day when "this idea (they) have for a new spell" gets
funding.

Popular entertainment and spy technology have long gone hand in hand.
I have read several books on spy culture and they all tell stories about
such.
For instance, many of our cold war agents in other countries were avid fans
of popular spy shows of that time - to such an extent that they demanded
(and received) video tapes of said shows as soon as they came out. Many our
the (then) fantastic devices in them were quickly requested and engineered
for use.

Life imitates art.
